Earthquake relief for elders in Santo Domingo Tonalá, Oaxaca, Mexico!
Since the beginning of September, earthquakes ranging from 6.1 to 8.1 magnitude have wreaked havoc in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. In the small town of Santo Domingo Tonalá, a number of elders’ homes were damaged as a result of these earthquakes. The damage ranges from severe, like a collapsed roof and destabilized structures to lesser, but nonetheless worrying, issues like exposed electrical wires and cracked walls (with chunks of plaster falling off). This unfortunate turn of events has brought uncertainty and vulnerability back into these elders’ lives.
Who we are:
Nija’nu A.C. (www.nijanu.org or https://www.facebook.com/nijanu.mexico/) is a Mexican non-profit organization that has been committing its time and efforts to giving 35 vulnerable elders, living in extreme poverty, a more dignified way of life since 2013. We have provided regular food aid, home visits and upgrades to the elders’ homes to make them safe and more joyful places to live. We have also created an activities center in order to bring laughter and community into our elders’ lives.
We now need your help in making our elders’ homes safe again, providing them with a sense of security after these terrifying events.
It is thus, with a hopeful heart, that we ask for your donation. The funds raised will go directly to the reconstruction of the homes damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes. Additionally, the funds will be used to fix or replace any basic utilities which may have been damaged or broken. Finally, funds will also be allocated to any medical or psychological attention that our elders may require after these devastating events.
All funds will go directly to the Nija'nu program director's, Karen E. Rasmussen, personal bank account. She is located in Oaxaca and will be responsible for getting the estimates, hiring the workers and supervising any and all of the work done on the houses of our elders.
