MY WHY: I was homeless as a teenager after fleeing domestic violence and I know the impact that anti-racist, anti-oppressive social workers canhave firsthand.

STORY BELOW Hi! I’m June Eric-Udorie, an award-winning writer, activist and birth doula, now based in Durham, NC. I serve as a birth doula to marginalized families in and around Durham, NC, and offering free services to women and birthing people in need by fundraising to provide services. You can learn more about me here.

Since I became a doula in July 2019, I’ve served over 59 families in the Triangle Area in North Carolina. Most of the families I work with are single-parent families, dealing with housing, job and food insecurity, unemployment (which is worse with  COVID-19), poverty, mental health challenges, immigrant status, disability, domestic or familial violence, or are military spouses with partners deployed abroad. I prioritize working with Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+, disabled and single-parent families.

Right now, I am pursuing my undergraduate degree at Duke University. As a result of the reproductive justice work I have done as a doula in my community, and seeing how oppression, racism and other factors combine to make BIPOC communities vulnerable, I am now looking to pursue Masters of Social Work (MSW) so that I can be on the frontlines, fighting for better outcomes for Black, Indigenous and People of Color As a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence, I know that working as a social worker will allow me to be a superior advocate for the marginalized, and to safeguard the vulnerable from harm and abuse. I am also aware of the ways in which social workers harm Black and POC communities, and I committed to working towards institutional change. The dream is to work as a perinatal social worker, supporting moms and birthing people with the mental health challenges that come with the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period.

In December 2020, I was accepted to my top choice MSW program. The total cost for tuition for my program is $25,000. The remaining $25,000 will go toward rent, medication, transportation, textbooks, healthcare, food, moving costs, and other costs for two years. Anything surplus will go towards an emergency savings for unexpected costs related to the degree.

Your donations help me get one step closer to my goal. Thank you for supporting me on this journey—I appreciate each and every one of you.
