Funda

Funda is a warm and kind-hearted young Turkish woman who came to America to improve her English, take classes and visit with her aunt.

On November 25th, inexplicably, this young woman who does not smoke, do drugs or engage in any negative health habits, suffered from a life-altering brain hemorrhage. She had massive bleeding in both her frontal and left lobes.

Her aunt found her unconscious on the floor after complaining of a headache earlier in the day. She was rushed to Cornell and then rushed into surgery. The doctors removed a part of her skull by performing a craniotomy and have managed to stop the bleeding. (They could not explain what caused the hemorrhaging in her brain.)

The next few days are critical.

The days and months that follow will be nothing short of transformative (and very, very costly).

She will need rehabilitation. Her doctors are uncertain of her future and what type of brain damage the hemorrhaging caused.

Funda was a student in this country, with no insurance.

Her parents are working-class Turks, with very little savings.

First thing first, we need the funds to bring her family here. They are - as we are sure you can all understand - going out of their minds being so far away from their daughter.

And then when Funda is able, we need the funds to send her home to Turkey, to be with her parents, her sister, and her niece (pictured above).

These good people want their daughter home. They need her to be home.

It's crazy that a young, healthy woman can have the course of her life change so drastically, so inexplicably, so quickly.

It's heartbreaking that this capable young woman who strived for something better, who worked hard, who never asked for a handout in her life, is now entirely dependent on the kindness of strangers.

But we have faith in us. We have faith in our community. We have faith in our friends, and in all the generous Turks who have made this country home through sheer grit and hard work. We know we will not let this young woman down in her time of need.

We hope you join us in giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives by opening your hearts to Funda.

She very much needs your help.

Thank you.

FAQ

Why are you raising funds instead of her family?
Very honestly, her family has neither the language skills nor the tech savvy to do this.

How well do you know Funda?
We know that she is sweet and kind and caring. And we know that Ayla and Evren adore her. Perhaps because every single time she is over here she draws them a scene from their favorite books and leaves it by their bed side as they sleep.

Why $12,000? Because we had to start somewhere.  If she survives, Funda's medical bills will be many times that. And simply put, she cannot afford to stay here if she has any brain damage.  She will need to go home to Turkey at the earliest opportunity.

How much should I give? Anything. Absolutely anything. This is not a tax-deductable charity. This is just you doing good in the world. Giving hope to a hopeless situation.
