Rally Around Eric York

We are reaching out to our friends, family, and the community to Rally Around Eric York.

On August 31, 2017 Eric suffered an acute attack of a neurological syndrome called Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis  with Guillian Barre overlap.  These two neurological syndromes are similar in nature and in Eric's case caused sudden onset paralysis/quadriplegia.

Bickerstaff Encephalitis/Guillian Barre syndromes are very rare autoimmune neurological disorders that affect the central nervous sytem, usually following some type of infection or virus.  The only known treatments for these syndromes is time, a blood filtering process known as plasmapheresis, and access to skilled medical treatment/intensive rehab therapy.  Fortunately, the prognosis is good for most patients with this access to make a full recovery.  The recovery process varies depending on the individual and the severity of the symptoms but 6 months to a year are expected.

Eric spent three weeks in Intensive Care at Eastern Maine Medical Center until he was stable enough to be moved to an inpatient skilled nursing room, where he remains at present.  During the past 2 months, since the initial onset, Eric has been fortunate to have received 2 rounds of the blood plasmapheresis treatments and excellent medical care.  The road to recovery has begun and will eventually take him to a rehab facility until he is ready to go home.

We are raising money to help with  medical expenses (intensive rehab therapy and equipment) and household expenses due to loss of income.  Any amount you are able to contribute will be so very helpful and appreciated by Eric & Amy.

Let's assist Eric to concentrate on recovery and raise much needed funds to someone who has contributed so much to others.  Rally Around Eric York.

From Eric's friends at Penobscot Job Corps:

"Eric is Penobscot Job Corps Center's (PJCC) Career Technical Training Manager and has been for the past 10+ years.  Eric's instructors have the upmost respect and admiration for him as well as his colleagues on the Operations Management Team.  Throughout his career, Eric managed the training and touched the lives of over 5,000 students.  He has been a leader on several community service projects including the Senior League World Series for 12 years and volunteered to provide Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners to PJCC students who did not have a home to go to for the holidays.  Through the years, he was involved with Skills USA and was a participant in the Bangor Region Leadership Institute and Building Bridges programs offered through the Bangor Chamber of Commerce.  We miss Eric and cannot wait for his return to continue his journey impacting the lives of our students and our staff"
