Yo quiero ayudar.

(Milagrosamente no estaba pelú)

Go To Think Tank Index report 2016'.

¿Cómo beneficia a Puerto Rico?

[English Version]

I want to help.

My name is Christian Irizarry Maysonet. I’m originally from Cidra, Puerto Rico (‘Cidreño’ by heart!).

Ever since I graduated high school I’ve been, just like many of you, working and studying hard to lift myself up and find my purpose in life. When I moved to Puerto Rico’s metropolitan area I worked in all kinds of jobs: from being a customer service representative, telemarketing, retail sales – I worked in anything and everything I could to pick myself up.

At Ana J. Candelas High School in Cidra, Puerto Rico. (I almost always need a haircut)

People always ask ‘What was the moment that changed your life?’ I think that specific moment didn’t exist; it was more like a collection of moments that happened in a very particular stage in my life. In my case, that stage was while I was working for a wireless phone service provider.

Customer service is probably the most difficult job a human being can do – I hated it. It was torture. However, it’s interesting how much you can learn even in places you don’t wan to be in. Part of my job was receiving phone calls from customers that were requesting payment arrangements – a due date extension because they didn’t have the money to pay their bill. In that state of vulnerability, people expose the most intimate aspects of their finances. The stories were incredible, sad, and worst of all, they were real.

When I worked as a customer service representative. (Again, I needed a haircut)

When I transferred to work as a retail sales associate in one of the company’s stores, I thought that that part of my job was history. But no, the only difference was that now, I would hear the stories while I watched the protagonist’s eyes water up as his voice trembled. I would always ponder on all the things that had led up to that moment – the conversations he had with his spouse and all the sleepless nights he probably went through.

In those days, the Puerto Rican economic crisis was already making itself felt. The potholes on the roads were getting worst, jobs were nowhere to be found, and little by little people had started to leave the island.

One by one I said my goodbyes to my family members, most of who, left the island in search of better opportunities. I was already sick and tired of making another trip to the airport – another goodbye. You probably know exactly what I’m talking about. You probably made a couple of those trips yourself. I also almost left.

One night I decided to stay. I don’t know if it was because I had a couple of drinks in my system, or because ‘Fiel a la Vega’s music was playing in the background, but I decided to dedicate my life to try to help. I thought that, since I don’t have any children of my own, I live on the bare minimum and I could sacrifice my personal aspiration to give way to something large.

Hosting a litigation workshop in law school. (Miraculously I didn't need a haircut here)

I really never wanted to be an attorney, but I realized that going to law school would equip me with some great tools that I could use in the future. Just one problem, I decided to go to law school, but I hadn’t even finished my bachelor’s degree. It’s interesting how motivated we can get when we have a big hairy audacious goal. I went back to school. I studied at night while working full time. With that big goal in my mind, I finished my degree and was accepted into the Interamerican University School of Law.

At a trial advocacy competition that took place in New York's Pace Law School. (I won the award for best closing argument)

Law school was a journey. As a student I worked in different law firms, I worked at the Federal Bankruptcy Court, at the Puerto Rico legislature, and I was a student leader. I had the honor of representing my school in seven academic competitions held in Puerto Rico, United States, and even England. I was president of the ‘Asociación de Litigación de la Universidad Interamericana (a student litigation association). I finished law school in December 2016. In March 2017, I took the Puerto Rico Bar Exam, and to my surprise, I got the second highest score in all Puerto Rico!! (I still can’t believe it)

The Next Step

If we’re going to improve the quality of life in Puerto Rico, we have to take proactive steps to ignite the economy. I bet on science and technology. One of Puerto Rico’s biggest problems is that we don’t count on the correct framework for flourishing innovation – the process of using research and development as a mechanism to modify existing industries and the spur the creation of new ones.

That’s precisely why I want to complete a Master’s Degree in Science and Technology Policy.

I was accepted into this master’s program that is offered by the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) located in England’s University of Sussex. SPRU was founded over 50 years ago. Recently, SPRU was ranked 1st in the UK (7th in the world) by the ‘Global Go To Think Tank Index report (2016), in its list of top science and technology think tanks.

SPRU gathers professionals from around the world and trains them to be leaders in their respective countries, and can establish the needed public policy to create the framework needed so that local economies can thrive, through science and technology.

What will I learn? How will this help Puerto Rico?

The Master’s Degree in Science and Technology Policy will help me gather the following skills, to be able to become an expert resource in the public policy creation process that needs to happen in Puerto Rico:

· understand the nature and operation of the policy process in contemporary economies. And you develop a systematic approach to policy analysis
· master the role of innovation from the perspectives of firm and individual choice and relate innovation to productivity, long-term economic growth, and competitiveness.
· identify sources of market dysfunction or failure including monopoly power, coordination failure, and principal-agent problems and understand the interventions or rule-setting that may prove useful in remedying these problems.
· demonstrate knowledge of technology and innovation system concepts and an understanding of their application in different technological, spatial, national and international contexts.
· demonstrate the analytical skills required to identify the interactions among key actors in technology and innovation systems, and to identify the main interactions running through these systems to link public policy and the innovative activities of business firms and other organisations.
· among others.

Costs

This program is expensive. I don’t have the necessary resources to pay for it. That’s why I’m asking for your help. I really can’t do this without your help.

I ask you to chip in and come with me on this journey. I know times are tough for all of us. But I also know, that if all of us donate just a little, whatever amount you can, we’re will accomplish this goal.
