Help Me, Help Africa

Donation protected
Half of my life I have wanted nothing more than to be a positive force of change in this world, a desire many would consider "impossible". Growing up, I spent most of my youth impacted by the things that have gone on throughout Africa. Hearing the stories of children left without their families enduring terrible circumstances and endless devastation. Something that I could never imagine. I can remember being 15 having a heart filled with empathy and the desire to make a difference. Now, 10 years later my dreams are finally coming true. I have found a way to be that force of change. This will be the greatest and most eye-opening experience of my life.

After years of planning I have finally found a way for change. IVHQ is a volunteer organization that partners with volunteer-seeking individuals to help place them in a program which changes the lives of people in poverty stricken countries throughout the world. On July 15, 2014 I will be embarking on the greatest adventure of my life. I will be spending 6 weeks volunteering at an orphanage in the small village of Arusha located in Tanzania, Africa. This is unlike anything I will ever experience. I will be leaving everything I know to travel to a country I have never been to in order to help others who need it the most.

On this journey I have a childhood friend traveling with me, Stephanie Burbo who also has the same passion for Africa as I do. We will be living with a host family. Durning our stay we plan on indulging into the Tanzanian culture in every aspect as possible, hopefully learning Swahili along the way. We will be volunteering 5 days a week at the local orphanage caring for the children, helping them learn, daily cleaning, and also helping in farm work. In our free time we plan on spending time with the locals in the community and truly getting a sense of Tanzania, their people, and their culture. I truly believe that the best gift you can give someone is help especially to those who have been born into a world of loss and poverty, and this is my chance to help.

I know that my trip to Africa is going to challenge me in every way possible. Realizing the luxuries I take for granted are a foreign concept in a third world country. Durning my volunteer stay I will have extremely limited sources to running water. I am willing to take all of the sacrifices as long as I know that I have helped at least one adult or child in need during my time spent in Africa. That is my only goal.

Although this trip is to volunteer, it is very costly. Any donations whether it be in the form of money or simply a word of encouragement will be greatly appreciated! Any extra money raised will go towards items to give to the children in the orphanage (toys, school supplies, coloring books, etc). I have already paid the registration fee of $249 and the following is a break down of the other expenses I will have. (Rough estimate.)

$2200 - Flight
$800 - Program fee
$500 - Vaccinations
$200 - Work permit
$100 - Visa
$35 - Water
Total: $4,000

Help me, help Africa.
Sincerely,
Andrea Julian Wright
