We at Rainbow House believe that Affordable Housing is a right and not a privilege.
Rainbow House Coalition is proud to launch our first house for at risk LGBT youth. After three months of hard work it is finally happening, as promised.
Our city faces an extreme lack of affordable housing and a shelter system unable to accommodate the needs of people on the street, especially for LGBT youth. In response, many service providers, advocates, developers, and people from the homeless community are convinced a new model of rapidly attainable housing designed around community, dignity, and self-determination is imperative. For youth coming to a program end, it is a struggle for them to find housing that is affordable. The additional burdens of apartment and utility deposits only exacerbate the problem.
Rainbow House Coalition’s first house will provide 5 bedrooms with private baths, common meeting areas, laundry and kitchen.
Without housing it is hard for these youth to focus on connections to the right types of care. They cycle in and out of hospital emergency rooms, inpatient hospital beds, detox programs, jails, prisons, and psychiatric institutions, all at high public expense. Some studies have found that leaving a person to remain chronically homeless costs taxpayers as much as $30,000 to $50,000 per year. That is just for one person.
With each $36,000 we raise through this campaign, we can rent housing for 4-6 youth for one year. Once in the program, they will pay weekly rent. Half of this money goes towards house expenses and the other half goes into a trust. This will also allow them to develop a rental history for future needs. The longer they stay, the more their savings will grow. This will give them a chance of sustaining themselves and remain productive members of society.
All of this is done through UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY and your donation, no matter how big or small.
