Help Feed People in Nepal-COVID-19 Relief

When we first brought money and rice to help feed the hungry in Kathmandu we were amazed at how difficult it was to mandate safe distancing. Sushil made the comment, ‘The people weren’t afraid of the virus. They were only afraid of not getting food.’
So many people walked to Kathmandu and were turned away hungry when MenzFoundationran out of food. First they gave the day workers such as rickshaw drivers and blind people a couple weeks’ supply of rice, dal, oil and salt. Then they made up little packages that could fit in the palm of your hand for the rest.
So many new infections come everyday, still over 8,000 in one day. Yes, we need oxygen tanks and such, but many countries are sending these supplies. We see hunger as being the biggest super-spreader of this pandemic.
Many Nepalis are in desperate need of oxygen tanks and and various medical treatment supplies, and fortunately many countries are sending these supplies. Still, we need more. We see hunger as being the biggest super-spreader of this pandemic.
While collaborating with other, small NGO’s to help with this, what we’ve discovered was that many Nepali are working now to bring oxygen tanks and such. Various countries are donating tanks and bringing medical volunteers now. Although this is wonderful, it is leaving a real need for food. We are working to fill this gap. If people have enough food they can stay home and stay safe, rather than in crowds seeking food

The fund will be used for:
1. 100% of the proceeds earmarked for food will be used to purchase rice, lentils, oil and possibly salt to be distributed within 24 hours of funds reaching us.
2. 100% of the money raised for PPE suits for first responders in the far west of Nepal will be ordered as soon as funds come in and PPE suits will be sent weekly.
3. We hope to raise $5,000 for food and $2,500 for PPE suits, so any unspecified funds will be 75% for food and 25% for PPE suits.
4. We will be working with MenzFoundation for food distribution and White Butterflies Foundation for making and distributing the PPE suits.
