It’s Ruff Without a Roof is a small non-profit, all-volunteer rescue based out of Union Dale, PA. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome our dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south. We are committed to saving the lives of these dogs as they did not otherwise stand a chance. Here is a story about one of those pups who desperately needs your help.
Dale is a sweet and adorable 6 year-old spaniel mix who, together with his brother Chip, survived Hurricane Irma earlier this year. Before we even met him, Dale warmed our hearts with his fuzzy little face and sad eyes. We couldn’t wait to get him and his brother to PA where we knew we would find them forever homes with loving families.
When Dale arrived in Pennsylvania, we discovered that he was heavily heartworm positive. We routinely have to treat many of our Southern rescue dogs for heartworm disease so it did not worry us to badly - until late one evening when Dale started having trouble breathing.
We feared the worst and rushed Dale to an Emergency Veterinarian in Brooklyn New York where an x-ray revealed a heavy worm load in Dale’s right ventricle. This was causing what is known as Caval Syndrome. There were so many worms in Dale’s little heart that his heart valve was not closing properly. Because of this, blood was leaking backwards through this valve every time his right ventricle contracted. He was also suffering from pulmonary hypertension causing him to gasp for oxygen.
Dale was immediately sent to Animal Medical Center where he had a life saving surgery. The doctors cautioned us that Dale might not survive the procedure. It was however, clear to us that this little boy never received the love and care he deserves before he came to It’s Ruff Without a Roof. We wanted to give this him a chance at living the rest of his life in a loving home so we decided to go ahead with the surgery.
The surgery went well but unfortunately the recovery has been slow and after spending days in an oxygen cage, poor Dale is still in the animal hospital receiving the care he needs. The doctors assure us that Dale’s heart and lungs are recovering but we cannot rush the healing process. It might take another week before our boy can leave Animal Medical Center. We are committed to save Dale’s life but our little rescue needs your help. Please consider donating to this cause.
