Hi all,
I’m Suguru Min, a senior at Waseda University in Japan. I have been studying at Portland State University as an exchange student since April. I’m writing this for my friend, Sho Morita, who was tragically hit by a car. Sho’s body and head were seriously injured. He was in the ICU for a month. The driver was intoxicated over the legal limit and was arrested soon after. I established this funding campaign so that he and his family can receive much needed financial help.
Sho is also a senior at Waseda University. He came to Portland in April as a member of the same International exchange program. After arriving in Portland, besides studying English, he joined the college soccer team and was spending a great time here with friends in Portland. He is bright, funny, and always friendly. He is adored by everyone who gets to know him.
Sho’s family and friends were stunned by this accident. His life was completely disrupted. I am asking our friends and the community to offer help in order to relieve the burden on his family. We would gladly appreciate anything you can offer: prayers, thoughts, and donations.
【How the accident happened and Sho’s condition】
On June 25th, at midnight, Sho was hit by a car which drove through a red light while Sho was walking on the crosswalk on his way to his host family’s home. The driver was reported to be intoxicated above the legal limit. After the accident, Sho was transported to OHSU hospital. Thanks to the work of OHSU’s doctors and nurses, his life was spared. However, his body was severely injured. He sustained a severe head injury along with a broken right arm and right leg. Because of the damage to his brain, doctors believed that he may be in a coma forever, or he might lose his life.
He was in a coma for almost a month after the accident, but he woke up miraculously. Since then he has recovered well with care from his family, friends, and the staff from OHSU. HE IS NOW FULLY CONSCIOUS and capable of communicating with us. He was then transferred from OHSU Hospital to a Japanese hospital for financial reasons. It’s still unclear when he can be discharged. Based on his condition, the doctors advise us that we should be prepared for a long stay at the hospital.
【Medical expenditures and other costs】
Regarding his medical expenditures, Sho bought insurance for studying abroad and his medical fees are compensated to a certain extent. However, medical fees in the U.S. are much more expensive than in Japan.His insurance coverage has reached its limit due to the U.S. medical expenses and transportation to Japan. The family will be overrun by medical costs because of his continuing care.
The cost of transporting his family to the U.S. and a percentage of the medical fees in Japan are not covered by his insurance and his family had to pay for it by themselves. Furthermore we are unsure when he can leave the hospital, the total amount of medical fees is unknown. Thus I am establishing this fund and asking for your help to reduce his family’s burden even just a bit.
【Goal of the fund and how to use it】
All of the donations will be handed to Sho’s family and used for the transportation cost of his family and the medical fee in Japan as written above. I am setting the goal at $80,000. To be honest, the expenditures in the future vary greatly depending on how well Sho can recover, so the goal is only a guide. It is likely to cost more than that.

【事故の経緯と晶の状況】
6月25日深夜、晶がホストファミリーの家に帰る途中の横断歩道で、赤信号を無視した車に轢かれ大怪我を負いました。運転手は飲酒運転で、晶に過失は一切ありません。その後ポートランドの大学病院に搬送され、幸い事故直後には一命を取り留めましたが右手右足を複雑骨折し、脳へのダメージも著しかったため、当初医師からは最悪命を落とすか、よくても寝たきりの状態のままだろうと伝えられるような状況でした。
その後一ヶ月弱ほどこん睡状態が続いていましたが、奇跡的に目を覚まして、今では意識もはっきりしていて会話ができるほどにまでなりました。先日アメリカから日本の病院に搬送されましたが、依然として退院のめどは立っておらず、引き続き入院が必要な状態です。それに加えて、回復した後も長いリハビリ生活を強いられることになります。
【医療費やその他費用について】
医療費について、晶は留学用の保険に加入しているため一定額までの入院治療費は補償されるのですが、アメリカの医療費が日本と比べて段違いに高額なため、アメリカでの入院治療費、アメリカから日本へ搬送する際の費用で保険金額の上限にほぼ達しているのが現状です。
ご家族のアメリカへの渡航費や日本での治療費に関しては、留学用の保険では全てはカバーされない可能性があり、ご家族自身で賄わなければならないということも大いに考えられます。また、日本での治療費やリハビリにかかる費用については退院のめども立っていないため、いくらかかるかも想定できません。そこでこのページを通じて少しでもご家族の負担を減らせればと考えています。
【募金の目標金額とその用途】
募金していただいた金額は全額晶の家族に引き渡され、上で述べたご家族のアメリカへの渡航費と日本での治療費もしくはその他晶のケアにかかる費用に使われます。目標金額としては80,000ドル(約880万円)に設定しています。正直今後かかる費用が晶の回復状況によって大きく変動するため、目標金額はあくまで目安です。目標金額以上に費用がかかる可能性も大いにあります。その際には目標金額を変更することも考えています。
【皆さんにお願いしたいこと】
