Dante is my beloved standard poodle. Four months ago, Dante had surgery to remove a large spiderweb-like tumor that had spread throughout his upper jaw. The pain of the tumor made it impossible for him to open his mouth.
Part of Dante's upper jaw was also removed during the surgery. It was bone cancer. The six-hour surgery and chemotherapy treatments cost $4700. Additional costs for medication, follow-up xrays, etc. will be approximately $400. I am requesting donations from friends to help pay for the chemotherapy and surgery Dante needed to extend his life. Thank you, in advance, for helping me help Dante. Chemotherapy has increased Dante's chances of survival from several months to a year or more.
Asking friends for money is uncharacteristic and uncomfortable for me.. However, I am doing this because it is for Dante. The treatment has given him more time to live and enjoy life.
The veterinary hospital is accepting installment payments due to my financial situation. I have a chronic illness, a neuroimmune disease (ME/CFS), that limits my ability to work more and earn enough to pay for Dante's veterinary care.
Dante and I walk in the woods, wade in the Willamette River. We snack on crackers and cream cheese at midnight. In his dog park in Watertown, Dante had a reputation as a thief. He stole a cell phone, a foil-wrapped spaghetti dinner; he sidled up to friends, put his long nose in their pockets, stole whatever he found (often, treats for their dog), and then ran.
At the vet's office, Dante insists on sitting upright in the chair next to me. While I am driving, he puts his paw on top of my right hand. He is my dear companion.
When Dante developed bone cancer, he was too sick to walk inside the house by himself. He couldn't drink from his water bowl; it was too painful. He yelped because he wanted to eat but he couldn't. He lost 7 pounds in as many weeks. Before surgery, I fed him his food and pain medicine through a syringe. The tumor prevented his mouth from opening fully, and the pain was excruciating. Now, he eats and drinks heartily, though sloppily.
The surgery and chemotherapy have rejuvenated Dante. He picks up his squeaky toy and prances with it to the park. He will be 13 in September and I am very glad he is otherwise healthy and happy. He had excellent veterinary care in the oncology department at Oregon State University Veterinary Hospital.
With your support, Dante's expenses are taken care of and he continues to receive follow-up veterinary care and to enjoy life! It is difficult to express how much this means to me. Please consider donating what you can. I look forward to updating you on Dante's progress.
