Help Courtney Get Her Diabetic Alert Dog

Help me get a life changing Diabetic Alert Dog.

Something that defines me? Strong... Something that will never define me? Type 1 Diabetes.

Sitting on the cold doctor's table on June 18, 2007, I waited patiently for the doctor. Fiddling my thumbs and swinging my legs over the side of the table. The nurse had already checked everything and now I just waited for the doctor's okay.

In stepped the doctor...her words were anything but okay. She diagnosed me with Type 1 Diabetes after seeing my blood sugar reading above 300, although the normal blood sugar is under 120. I was admitted into the hospital the same day.

I went home from the hospital thinking the burden would wear away, but it didn't....and it hasn't. It has become a persistent pain for me, my parents, and siblings.

Testing my blood sugar numerous times a day, and treating lows with sugar and highs with shots is tedious and ongoing. Especially if all of it, seemed to be for no gain. My blood sugars always end up high or too low even after I would treat and test myself. I started wearing an insulin pump to make the shots easier but the ups and downs remain.

I looked for ways to make it easier to manage my diabetes. Especially because of my dedication to my love of volleyball, and school. If my blood sugar was at an extreme it would have a negative effect on my performance in each of these areas. I would be rising or dropping and didn't even know it...

I want people to see me as a "star student-athlete", not as the " athlete with that "problem". Again, I don't want my diabetes to define me.

So after talking with my mom about this, she searched and searched for an answer.
The answer?
A D.A.D.
In other word's a Diabetic Alert Dog. These dogs aren't machines, they don' t have batteries nor do they have motors. They have beating hearts and a trusting nose. I was so excited that my mom shared this solution with me. I could have a dog that catered and worked for me in return for affection and love. They would alert me if my blood sugar was on the way up or down, way before any meter could tell me. He could wake me up in the middle of the night or get my parents if I reach a dangerous, life threatening low in my sleep. He would make my life easier.

All of this could happen. I could have a companion that could improve every aspect of my life. Making it easier to uncover the characteristics I have that really define me. To get this life changing dog and all of its perks -funds are needed. The money has to be raised so I can go to Jasper, Texas to get him and be trained to handle him in April. So everything counts, please help me raise this money for my D.A.D. The money will cover my D.A.D's education and training, and my training to handle him. It will also help with the start up cost for his care and maintenance. So again please donate to help me define my life forever!
