Helmick's for Helping in Haiti

Donation protected
We live in a world in which we are constantly bombarded with images and stories of incredible need, whether in our local communities or all the way on the other side of the world. Our hearts break for those in need and we often think, "I wish I could do something." But it is overwhelming, life is busy, and we just move on, and what difference could we really make anyway?

We have encouraged our kids to keep an open heart and when they have an opportunity to make a difference, small or large, do something! Whether it is bringing no longer needed items to the Women's Shelter, helping run a food drive for needy fellow students, collecting shoes for those devastated by the earthquake in Haiti, or buying an extra loaf of bread at the Charleston Bread Company for the homeless man sitting on a bench just across the street, they love to help.

Over the last few years, our kids have been not only growing older but also growing more world conscious, more cognizant. Conversations have been evolving and we now have budding humanitarians! It is amazing to see their compassion and empathy sprouting and their desire to improve the welfare and happiness of others. They have been considering all the ways they plan to make a difference in this world.

My daughters, Betsy, Maggie, and Abbi have asked to join our friends, Betsy and her daughter, Chloe, on a mission trip to Haiti this spring. They have been to Haiti several times and have shared their touching and heartwarming experiences which have inspired us to do something! We are going to spend a week at Mother Theresa's Sisters of Charity, an orphanage and medical clinic -following the Mother Theresa's model, they serve the poorest of the poor and the sickest of the sick. The Sisters meet the basic needs of these babies the best they can. Unfortunately, there are many babies and not enough hands to give them all the love and attention that we know is crucial with baby development. We will spend our days helping the Sisters, holding the babies, help feeding and caring for them. It is our hope to go and in our short time there, offer assistance as well as comfort. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of its population living below the poverty line and 54% living in abject poverty.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! It is our hope and prayer that you will consider helping by sponsoring our mission trip so that we can take this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children. Each of us is so blessed in our own lives. Here is an opportunity to do something!

The estimated minimum expense for our trip is $800 each. We would need a total of $3200 for the four of us, me and my daughters. Any excess donation will be used to buy supplies we plan to bring and donate in Haiti.

Please consider sponsoring us, in whatever amount you are comfortably able to give, every dollar helps! We thank you in advance for your generosity.

With hopeful hearts and open arms,

Betsy, Maggie, Abbi and Colleen
