ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando woman says she’s not sure how she’ll be able to afford food this week after a brazen thief robbed her as she left a bank.
Helene Sackowitz, 73, said she had just deposited her payroll check and taken out $140 Thursday night when a man approached her and demanded the cash.
She said that was all the money she had to live off of for the week and that she couldn’t get any help from her bank or elsewhere.
Bank of America officials told her they’re not replacing the money that was stolen and several local charities also turned her down.
Meanwhile, Orlando Police Department detectives are trying to identify the alleged robber.
“He told me if I turned around he was going to shoot me,” Sackowitz said.
The victim said she is grateful to be alive.
“I was frightened. Maybe I should’ve had a gun in the car where I could have shot him,” she said.
Sackowitz said the robber said he would kill her as she tried to her into her car in the parking lot of the bank on Michigan Street and Conway Road.
Sackowitz had just cashed her paycheck from a part-time job at Disney.
“One-hundred and forty dollars. That was my salary,” she said. “For me it’s a whole lot of money,”
Now Sackowitz is scrambling to figure out how she’ll replace the desperately needed cash.
“I depend on that money to get my food and whatever else I need (including) medical supplies,” she said.
Detectives hope they can get pictures from surveillance video around the bank to help track down the robber.
