Hearing Aids for Paolo

This July, Paolo experienced a sudden onset of total hearing loss in his left ear, severe ringing in both ears, dizziness and nausea. His doctor treated him, but when he wasn’t improving he sent Paolo to an ENT who treated him for a viral infection. His ENT believed the viral infection could account for the hearing loss. Paolo was also tested by an audiologist, and the results showed that he had 53% hearing loss in his left ear and 30% in his right ear. After a couple of weeks the dizziness & nausea subsided, the ringing lessened, and he regained back some of his hearing.

We knew since Paolo was a child that he had mild hearing loss in his left ear, but we were shocked when we learned how bad it was and that it affected both of his ears. Apparently, Paolo learned to adapt and thought the hearing loss he experienced  was “normal”.

A few weeks ago, Paolo was fitted with “demo” hearing aids. He was so excited to hear what he’d been missing. After making modifications to his demos, his doctor recently fitted him with permanent hearing aids and Paolo could not be happier!

Medical insurance will not cover hearing aids. Paolo’s Case Worker applied to six agencies that she knew gave funding for them, but was unsuccessful in obtaining funding as most were out of funds for the year.
