Healing for Charlotte’s Heart

When I was 7 months pregnant with Charlotte, I went in for a routine ultra sound. The technician was unable to get clear pictures of her heart. They referred me to a specialist and that was when I was told my daughter was diagnosed with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. She had a hole in the bottom two chambers of her heart and her pulmonary artery was too small. Since the pulmonary artery was too small she would not get enough blood to her lungs. Her cardiologist informed us she would have to have open heart surgery to correct it. Fast forward a couple months and again I went in for a routine doctor’s appointment except this time I was sick. I was preeclamptic and was told I would be having the baby today. We opted for a C-Section to not place any extra stress on her heart. She was born December 5, 2016 (36 weeks gestation) and was scheduled to have open heart surgery that day.  Later on, we were presented with another option. The surgeon would place a stent in her PDA , which is an extra blood vessel that connects the pulmonary artery and the aorta. The PDA closes shortly after birth so we would need to make a decision immediately. We opted to place the stent to allow Charlotte to get stronger. Her surgery was pushed back until she reached 3 months. When she became 3 months old, it was pushed back to 6 months and then a year. Charlie girl is now a year old and we were shooting for surgery in January. This morning I received a phone call from our case manager stating there was an opening on Wednesday, December 20th. Being that it’s such short notice and it’s the christmas season, we were not financially prepared for surgery next week. Charlotte will be at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles for a week following a 6 week recovery. My husband and I are both going to be off work so we can help our little girl heal. We love you all and appreciate all of your prayers and support for Charlotte.
