Harpist Healing Hearts

Donation protected
Broken Harp, Broken Hearts, help me heal my instrument & the hearts of cancer patients by strumming for hope at cancer centers.

My project is about healing, healing my instrument so that I can help heal the hearts of others. I am raising money to fix the sound board on my harp, and launch a nonprofit organization aimed to volunteer countless hours to help heal and calm the minds of cancer victims.

I am a Harpist looking to heal the hearts of cancer victims and their families through music. I want to fix my harp to create a nonprofit organization (Harpist Healing Hearts,) in which, I will play at hospitals in the area to help ease the pain and fear that accompanies cancer. My dream with Harpist Healing Hearts is to play personally for cancer patients across the state, as well as, in main lobbies of hospitals and eventually to be able to offer free harp lessons to children battling cancer, empowering them with the gift of music. Once I get my instrument fixed and Harpist Healing Hearts off the ground, any donations received will be donated to the American Lung Cancer Society.

My mother was a victim of lung cancer which took her life in 2008. I used to sit with her at Mofitt Cancer Center here in Tampa for all her treatments. On the darkest days, we would travel into the lobby in hopes of hearing uplifting music. On the days musicians were there my mother would be able to find peace with her fight and she would fall into a state of serenity. Musicians in the hospitals helped heal and fight the fear for her, they brought peace to her restless mind.

My mother is deeply tied to my music, she is my strength in music. I have been playing the harp since 1999, when my mother first encouraged me to express myself through music. She made it possible for me to live my dream of becoming a harpist, and pushed me to better my performance and music education.

I wish my story had a better ending, and that my mother could be here today to tell how profound a roll music played in her sickness; but we were not as lucky as other families. On August 12th 2008, cancer claimed my mothers life. I shortly after stopped playing the harp. It hurt to even look at my instrument, as if gazing upon the golden staff and multicolored strings ripped open a wound that was too fresh, too real.

In 2010, I decided to start healing; to play again, to soothe myself though music again and put back together the pieces of my heart which were shattered in 2008. The music came flowing back to me, every chord was healing and uplifting. Unfortunately, later that year my sound board cracked, rendering my harp unplayable. I felt defeated and broken just like my instrument.

I am now a college graduate, working full time and being a full time mother of a beautiful boy. It is my dream to strum my harp for hope again, to bring a smile to your loved one who like my mother may not of had the energy minutes before to laugh.

I am going to be investing a bit of money into a hard case for my harp to protect it better. This case will be the backbone to Harpist Healing Hearts. I am going to decoupage the entire case with the names of the project backers and cancer victims.

If ever you have known someone to fight the battle of cancer and/or walked the front lines with them, you know of the struggle for hope and joy in the darkest of hours. Please help me travel Florida and bring light into the lives of those who need it the most, to those who are fighting for survival.
Thank You.

Here is a little bio on me:

Tyan Danielle Long
Hello! I am Tyan Long. I have been playing the harp since 1999. Since then I attended performing arts schools which offered the ability to major in harp performance. I played professionally in the greater Tampa Bay Area for 6 years. I am classically trained in harp performance, and am expanding my repertoire to include jazz harp. My first year of college I attended Florida State, and was a double major in the School of Music and Biological Sciences. In 2007 I returned to Tampa and helped my youngest brother take care of our sick mother. I transfered schools to the University of Tampa and played Harp in their wind ensemble. In 2008 my mother past away and in 2010 my harps sound board cracked open. I have not played publicly since then. Through out the rest of college I saved money to fix my harp and was nearing my goal when I found out I was pregnant. I used the money for the birth of my son instead. I am now a college graduate, working full time and being a full time mom. I work at Buddy Brew Coffee, a local coffee shop/roaster here in Tampa FL. Between coffee making and Diaper Changing I tend to my gardens and chickens. (You can see my ladies in the background of the video!) I have 17 hens which I love dearly, as well as, 6 vegetable gardens. It is never a dull day here on this mini Farm! My Fiancée is a local chef and together we love tending to the earth and giving back to the soil! Our son (Falkon Flannery) is 1 and a half and quite the musician/farmer himself! I anxiously await the day I can begin to teach him to play the harp and give back to the community to which he belongs

Risks and Challenges:
The main set back I would encounter in getting Harpist Healing Hearts off the ground would occur in the fixing stage of the instrument. Lyon & Healy Harps has the instrument now and are just waiting for funds to fix it. From the date that they start it could take up to 6 months to fix. I allocated enough time in between the kickstarter end date and the rewards to account for 6 months. But if something were to take longer I would know in advance and work with my backers to let them know when they could be expecting music. I will also be doing all of my bookings in a icalander this should prevent double bookings as I start traveling across florida and playing. One of the main things I will be doing is posting updates to my tumbler about the progress of my harp and the kickoff of Harpist healing hearts summer 2014!!!
