We are seeking funds to outfit four classrooms-one kindergarten, one 3rd grade, and two 6th grade--with outdoor clothing and gear to start our Outdoor Classrooms at Hardwick Elementary School. Our immediate need is for rain gear and outdoor tools to help us learn in all types of Vermont weather!
Why Outdoor Classrooms?
At the end of the last school year, our two 6th grade classes participated in a three-day field trip to Nature's Classroom in Freedom, NH. When I asked my students what one thing they would like to bring back to our school from Nature’s Classroom, almost every student said they would like to have more outside learning opportunities. Hearing this on the heels of seeing some of my most challenging students flourish while learning outside convinced me to move forward with trying to do something different with and for my students. Teaching and learning with my students outside can provide exciting possibilities for engaging, fun, and meaningful learning.
In a time when kids seem to so easily connect with technology and screens, we are eager to get our kids outside and connected with the natural world. We will teach some of our science, math, geography, and literacy classes in our outdoor classrooms using standards-based lessons that are aligned with those lessons taught indoors.
Where Will Your Donation Go?
Our immediate need is for rain gear because we plan to spend at least a half a day per week learning outside as long as the weather is safe.
$1800.00 will be used to purchase rain gear for four classrooms.
$400.00 will be used to purchase outdoor gear such as Kelly Kettles, (for boiling water for tea or hot chocolate on cold Vermont winter days!) vegetable peelers (they are great tools for safely whittling wood!), folding camping knives, folding camping saws, and parachute cord.
You have the opportunity to help us transform the way we teach and the way our kids experience learning. Any amount you can give to get our Outdoor Classrooms started is GREATLY appreciated!
