Hi all!
As many of you know, I'm about to head out to The MacDowell Colony, where I'll spend the entire month of April working on my book. For the uninitiated, MacDowell is an historic artists' colony in New Hampshire that awards highly competitive fellowships to artists and writers. It's an absolute dream come true to be offered a residency, and the kind of thing where you just say yes, and then figure out how to work it the fuck out. Which brings us to now.
Side note: You should totally apply , deadline 4/15.
I tried to bang out an extra month of work in advance to make up for the financial hit of taking time off, and though I did pretty well, I still have a shortfall. So I'm throwing up this last minute appeal, in case anyone feels moved to chip in.
Obviously, I'm someone who does not have a ton of money. That said, I regularly give to Patreon. I also regularly buy the hardcover -- I go to the show, the reading, the happening... etc. My point is, I do this stuff because it's how I want to live -- it's the kind of world I want to live in. I do it because it feels fucking amazing. So as conflicted as I am about asking for help in this fashion, I'm trying to look at it from the giving side --trusting that some of you will be happy, excited even, to throw a few bucks at this dream of mine.
Here are a few FAQs I've put together for your reading pleasure:
Q: I too want to go away to fucking paradise and make fucking art. Where the fuck is my mother fucking donation?
A: You should totally make your own campaign and spam me with it! 85% of the people who see it will roll their eyes and call you an irresponsible narcissistic, but 15% will be excited to share in your victory, in this small way.
Q: Why don't you do the kind of fundraiser where you mail out rewards, or tie contributions to productivity?
A: I don't have a ton of time for extra fuckery tbh, and I'm not convinced that anyone really cares about those rewards (are we not all drowning in clever tote bags?). As for productivity, although I have very high hopes for this huge swath of time, and want to make inroads on my memoir, I would also like to leave the door open to creative surprise. I may wind up making unexpected shit!
Q: When do you need the money by?
A: Yesterday. JK/NJK.
Q: I can't afford to give anything, is there something else I can do to support this endeavor?

Pretty sure he's going to eat 30 depressing bacon cheeseburgers from Wonderbar, otherwise.
