Pay off Medical Bills, Roe family

Haley Roe, daughter of Curt and Michelle Roe is a very mature 19 year-old young woman. In 2013, she graduated from Park Hill High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Haley is currently living in Florida, working and supporting herself while attending college, preparing to become a nurse. She is a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and an inspirational story to her family, and friends.

As a young girl, Haley decided she wanted to play softball.  She was hard at work with her father and coaches, practicing to be the best she could be. She became a role model to her teammates and other  kids interested in playing softball. She would spend her free time mentoring young people that also had a love for her favorite sport. She had no idea that soon she would become a role model to her family and close friends as she prepared to face the hardest struggle of her young life.

In the fall of 2010, Haley was sleeping more than the normal teenager. She had noticed lump on the left side of her neck and it was growing at an unbelievable rate.

After a few months and countless tests, it was determined whatever the growth was, had to be removed with surgery. After a few weeks of waiting for results from the pathologist tests, Haley was diagnosed with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, a rare form of sarcoma cancer. 

There were many tears and untold fears due to the common poor prognosis of this rare and aggressive cancer Haley now owned.  A second surgery needed to be performed to remove any remaining cancer cells. The risks involved with the surgery were unthinkable. Scary things... like the possibility of nerve damage resulting in paralysis of her left arm and face.Thankfully, with the team of very skilled doctors and nurses at KU Medical Center, the surgery and immediate recovery was a success! Haley has no nerve damage and only a very superficial scar is noticeable now.  Based on the tumor size removed at the first surgery and clear margins on the second, it was recommend no chemotherapy or radiation was needed.  The news was good and the initial results were more than could be hoped for. However, there would be deep emotional scars to deal with. There would be monthly MRI and CT scans, many doctors appointments and of course the “waiting game” to hear if cancer had been found on those scans. As time has past, those monthly scans turned to quarterly, then semiannual. To this day, the most recent annual scan is free and clear of any cancer!

Medical bills above what insurance covered left the Roe family with a debt totaling over $300,000. Over the years, Curt and Michelle have worked extremely hard to keep current on payments and have avoided collections. However, this debt has put a huge burden on the family, truly exhausting all resources. To date the total of medical bills still outstanding is $88,000. We, some close friends of the Roe’s, want to help lessen the impact that cancer has had on this chapter of their lives so they can move forward with one less stress on their family.

We are asking that you donate to the Roe family. Donated funds only applied towards medical bills and any money raised above the goal be donated back to a family with a similar situation. Please help us give this family some closure to this chapter in their lives.
