Hi! To start, thank you for taking the time to check out this sponsorship request! For any readers who don't know me well, I'm a mechanical engineer from Saint Paul, and have been volunteering with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity for around two and a half years - primarily leading youth workshops, to bring options for involvement for volunteers too young to help on home-build sites.
Habitat for Humanity has countless international projects too; this campaign is for a Global Village project in Esteli, Nicaragua. As the second poorest country in Latin America (after only Haiti), 79% of the people live on less than $2 per day, and 43% of all people on less than $1; 30% are malnourished. Additionally, the common house structure is comprised of a dirt floor, walls and roofs made of sheet-metal in various states of deterioration, and an average of 6.6 people per household.
I'm going with Global Village to Esteli for a week in March, to help with the construction of 32 earthquake-resistant seed-houses - homes made with concrete floors, reinforced cinderblock walls, new corrugated steel roofing, and integrated electical systems, all designed for incremental improvement after the initial construction is complete.
The cost for the trip is around $1,450 - not including around $850 in airfaire. This will cover transportation while there, lodging, interpreters, travel insurance, meals, guides, etc. I'm excited for the opportunity to see Nicaragua, to put in hard work for the safety and health of others, and to advance the sense that we are a global community. Any help in getting me there would be deeply appreciated! In return, I may doodle a dinosaur for you, or maybe sing you a song about various foods, possibly tell you some bad puns, or just generally thank you incessantly.
