Solar Cookers Save Lives!

Did you know that 3 billion people around the world are still using firewood to cook their food and that there are 65 million refugees worldwide?

We are 6th Graders from Hamlin Middle School in Springfield, Oregon , and this quarter, we have researched how solar energy is saving lives of refugees and other displaced people.

Refugees from all over the world are risking their lives with every fire they build.  We believe that solar cookers can provide a cleaner, safer alternative to traditional fire-cooking methods.

Refugees are civilians from all over the world--Syria, Sudan, Somalia, and many other countries--who had to flee their homes due to war, violence, and persecution.  When they leave home, they are often forced to travel far distances and live in temporary refugee camps.

While living in these camps, refugees face many challenges.  They have little access electricity and  clean drinking water.  Smoke inhalation from constantly cooking over fires causes multiple health problems.  There is a shortage of fuel in many areas.  Women and children often risk violence, rape, or kidnapping while searching for firewood outside of the camps.  There are also very few economic opportunities within the camps for families to make a better life.

We believe solar cookers can solve these problems by using the sun's energy to purify water, eliminating the need for fires, which reduces toxic fumes in homes.  Families will no longer need to leave the camps and risk their lives to gather firewood.  Instead, solar cookers provide multiple opportunities for education and jobs.

We ask that you partner with us--the 6th grade class at Hamlin Middle School and Solar Cookers International--to save the lives of refugee families around the world.  Donate today to help us reach our goal of providing 5 families with the life-saving technology solar cookers provide.
