HDRescue-Hypoallergenic Dog Rescue

Most people are aware that there are more dogs in shelters and rescues than there are potential owners. Approximately 780,000 dogs are euthanized in the United States every year. That comes out to an average of 2,137 per day! Because of increased awareness, more and more potential dog owners are adopting, instead of buying from breeders. But what about those families with allergy concerns?
In addition to the poodle (which is the only breed that has hair instead of fur) there are many breeds that are considered hypoallergenic because they are low shedding. According to the dictionary, “hypoallergenic” means: Having little likelihood of causing an allergic response. These breeds include, but are not limited to:
· Bichon Frise
· Havanese
· Lhasa Apso
· Maltese
· Poodle crosses
· Shih Tzu
· Wheaten Terrier
· Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie)
But how do you know what breed(s) you are getting from a shelter or a rescue? You don’t, really. You typically get a “best guess”, with no guarantees. This is why most allergy sufferers believe that they have to get their dogs from breeders. HD Rescue (Hypoallergenic Dog Rescue, Inc.) would like to change that stigma so that these families can finally have a fearless way of adopting hypoallergenic dogs from a rescue!
After bringing the dogs to their primary foster home, HD Rescue will do the following:
1. Swab the pet’s mouth for a DNA sample to be immediately sent out and tested
2. Take the rescue to a vet for a checkup (schedule for follow-ups, microchip, and spaying/neutering, if necessary)
3. Take the pet to a groomer
4. While waiting for DNA tests to come back, we will work on socialization, potty training, and obedience
5. After DNA tests come in, we find an appropriate secondary foster who will be the primary contact for interested adoptees.
6. A photograph will be placed on the company’s main website, Facebook page, and adoption websites. A brief bio will include physical, emotional and genetic traits of the animals
7. Applications for adoption will be received and reviewed by the secondary foster, President and Vice President.
8. The top few candidates are offered a visitation with the pet and are required to have a home visit done
9. The top candidate will be offered a three-day foster of the pet to see if it will be a good fit, allergen wise, and, additionally, with any other animals already in the family.
10. If all goes well, that family will complete the adoption process.
11. If the top candidate doesn’t work out, the 2nd candidate is offered the three-day foster, and so on.
12. Once adopted, we request that a family picture be sent back for documentation and that they keep in touch!
Right now, we are using gofundme for startup costs. Once our rescue is granted non-profit status, we will update our fundraising vehicles and all donations will be tax deductible! :)
