Gullah/Geechee Storm Rebuilding

Hurricane Dorian September 2019

Fortunately, the Gullah/Geechee Nation has suffered no loss of life this hurricane season.  However, if it only half way over and we have had a massive hurricane named Dorian come to our coast.  It contributed to flooding in some areas, but for the most part it brought wind damage.  There are numerous Gullah/Geechee elders and institutions working on removal of trees and debris from roads and properties and many incurred roof damage including the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition.  The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition also lost one interpretive building.

Hurricane Florence and Flooding September 2018

This fund was started when we first were hit by Hurricane Matthew which many are still recovering from.  Now, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence which includes massive flooding in our northern most region.  So, we have renewed this fund and are asking for your support to help restore our communities and to provide emergency kits to Gullah/Geechee families.

Unfortunately, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is in a hurricane zone and the storms are becoming more frequent and intense.  So, emergency preparedness trainings are being offered from funds that are collected as well.

Thank you for supporting our efforts.

Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew struck the Gullah/Geechee Nation coastline with a fury that brought storm surge onto the land from the Atlantic Ocean while rain continued to fall from the sky.  This was met with howling winds that blew down trees which brought electrical wires with them.  Many roofs have to be repaired or replaced and numerous yards have massive trees that need to be cut into fire wood for Gullah/Geechee families.

The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition has had damage done to some of the archival files at De Gullah/Geechee Alkebulan Archive which is the ONLY archive in the world totally dedicated to Gullah/Geechee history, heritage, and culture due to water intrusion.  So, the on-going effort to storm proof and digitize this priceless collection has become even more critical given this latest storm that followed one month after Tropical Storm Hermine had already damaged De Gullah/Geechee Ga'dun.  Matthew completed the damage that Hermine had begun.

The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition hosts hundreds of volunteers each year.  They  are calling on volunteers with chain saws, wood spliters, axes, yard tools, trucks, roofing skills, and construction skills.

In addition to the volunteers, this fundraiser is being launched to purchase the tools and supplies that are needed for the restoration effort.  Funds will also go toward preparing and providing storm preparedness kits for Gullah/Geechee community members that will attended workshops to be held in the coming weeks as hurricane season continues.  These workshops will be hosted annually in order to insure that people have the knowledge that they need and also that items that they need in the event of a major storm or natural disaster.

"Empty sak cyan stan upright lone." So, we are asking for your help to restore the Gullah/Geechee Nation before the holy days season.   If you would like to bring or join a group of volunteers, email GullGeeCo@aol.com.  We also appreciate all that are willing and able to make a financial contribution.  Tenki Tenki!
