Guernesiais (aka Guernsey French or Patois) is our island's native language. It is a beautiful, lyrical version of Norman French spoken only on Guernsey. All of Guernsey's place names, family names, and expressions have hidden meanings that can be unlocked by knowing the local language.
There are only a few native speakers of Guernesiais. To keep the language living for future generations, we are creating tools to learn it and pass it onto our children.
I am a director of Island Language LBG, a non-profit organisation with the goal of publishing Guernesiais books, building an online dictionary and learning app for phones and desktops. Our aim is for students with no prior knowledge of Guernesiais to be able to learn words and phrases.
We want the app to be free to use and part of a bigger learning project including books, videos and lessons.
Donations will pay for: - Designing a website and app that is easy to use. - Adding entries and information. - Recording and research to keep the dictionary accurate and useful.
