Growing in the Margins

Youth are the future. With the decline of organic farmers and food growers due to aging happening in rural Ontario, now is the time to think about our local food system and how to keep it resilient for years to come. Investing in youth education is critical for that to happen. Growing in the Margins is a project that challenges the notion of who  is a farmer. And what does that look like? There’s a lack of Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour farmers as well as LGBTQIA2S+ farmers. This project also asks why. Our lack of representation in the local food movement and organic farming isn’t because we aren’t interested. Instead, it’s because there is a lack of infrastructure, representation, funding and land to help us on this sustainable journey.

This program will be year round for 8 months, in a greenhouse through the fall and winter and outdoors in spring and summer. It will take place once a week (2 hours) and 15 participants will learn the ins and outs of urban agriculture, marketing, further understand institutional and systemic factors in food insecurity, be involved in social justice, go on field trips to see other urban agriculture projects and much more.

This project is a sister to Sundance Harvest, however it’s not for profit.

My donation is my labour to this project. Which isn’t included in the fundraising money.

Due to institutional and systemic racism and barriers, I do not have inter-generational wealth. All the urban agriculture projects and work I’ve done have been from trying to write grants and attempting to sell enough kale to buy basic supplies.

Your donations will go towards the expenses for running this program once a week for the full 10 months. That includes; agricultural supplies such as fertilizers and amendments for the soil,  grow lights, nursery pots to start seedlings in with the participants and much more.

I need your help now to help secure a more ethical and sustainable future.
