Good Day Lovely People,
We are Miguel and Nikki, founders of Adopt A Backpacker WA. We started Adopt A Backpacker WA on March 26, 2020 as Facebook page group that serves as a flatform to help out stranded and struggling travellers/backpackers find free accomodations around Western Australia during the COVID-19 crisis. In less than 4 weeks, we now have 5.4K community members just in WA and Adopt A Backpacker facebook group in every state of the Australia run by amazing individuals like Abel, Helene, Allard, Kate and Chloe who shares our cause. We work as a team and we discuss the policies and goals of the page on a daily basis to provide the best service we can to help struggling backpackers.
We started Adopt A Backpacker because of a certain situation that one of our good friend Marielle who was a backpacker, loss her job due to Covid-19 and without an income she had to go back home to the Netherlands as she cannot afford to keep paying her rent. She was so devastated that she could not stay longer in Australia to eventually complete her 88-days of farmwork to be able to apply for a second year visa in Australia to keep travelling around this beautiful country. Her dreams were literally shattered right in front of our eyes. Nikki took her to the airport and she left some of her things and food to us. It was so emotional and so sad to see. That same night, we sat on our balcony and we decided to start "Adopt A Backpacker WA" in the hopes of helping these young struggling and lost backpackers.
As of to date, we have thousands of host all around Australia and we've been able to provide FREE accomodations to thousands of backpackers, travellers, international students, tourists, caravaners and nomads. We have around 15,000 Facebook members all around Australia working together to provided thousands of homes and/or free accomodations to these backpackers in exchange for a helping hand around the house like gardening, cooking, baby sitting, painting, dog sitting and ect..
It has been mind blowing to see the success of Adopt A Backapacker in such a short span of time. We have entire communities of Australians supporting our cause offering their backyards, spare bedrooms, parking spaces, garage, empty lots, farm houses, vacant properties, entire holiday homes and the most extravagant is entire beach resort houses offered to backpackers for Free.
Recently, we received private messages from amazing Australians wanting to donate cash incentives to these struggling travellers/backpackers to support them with their groceries as some of them are really struggling to buy food. As we do not want to take in the cash donations personally into our bank accounts, we decided to create this "gofundme" so that people can donate here and we can channel the donations appropriately and purchase grocery bundles to be given away.
