GleeProv headed to New York City for DCM

GleeProv has been accepted into the 16th Del Close Marathon in New York! We have been selected out of 1500 entries to take our improvised high school musical to the stage with other top groups from all over the United States. Many famous comedians perform in the festival, including favorites from SNL other television shows and movies. We will need financial support to fly the team to New York and stay in the city that never sleeps!

We have gotten some attention, not positive, because in haste, I have done a poor job sharing the expectations for the team, and responsibilities to you, the contributors. This page was designed with the intention to be shared among family and friends. We are humbled that it has gotten recognition in other improv communities, for which we have great respect. Fascinated with musical improv games, shows and workshops locally in Denver, I talked my voice teacher into starting a team with me in March 2013. Reading Michael Pollack’s books, listening to podcasts, and hours of trial and error, GleeProv was born and started to get legs. We adopted a “high school” theme, and decided to play the same characters every week. In February 2014, GleeProv was named Bovine Metropolis Theater’s premiere team, headlining every Thursday evening.

Getting accepted to the Del Close Marathon is a huge honor. Del Close, known for his pioneering influence in improv and his work at Saturday Night Live, passed away in 1999. The festival was named in his honor. The marathon was created and is hosted by comedy heavy weight, the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre. For more information visit www.delclosemarathon.com and www.ucbtheatre.com.

This year’s festival has 500 teams, featuring improv from the Writers Of Key & Peele, The Seth Meyers Show, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and more! SNL's Sasheer Zamata and Girl Code's Nicole Byer will be returning with Doppelganger, Broad City's Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer will be performing with Broad City Live, Twoprov groups John Lutz & Scott Adsit, Chris Gethard & Tami Sagher, Ellie Kemper & Christina Gausas, and others. Of course the UCB themselves will be returning for Asssscat and other shows! GleeProv leaves Denver Thursday afternoon, and leaves New York Monday so we can see as much improv as possible and take workshops from the masters.

What we hope to accomplish with the funds we raise:
$4,000 for most of the cast to fly out there, 8 tickets at approx $500 (Greg, Micah, Lindsay, Rebecca, Holly, Taylor, Joe, Ian) $2,000 if we can find lodging that is $50pp/night, which would be ideal. To find lodging for the ten players, we are hoping to secure a vacation rental, which is much cheaper than multiple hotel rooms for four nights.
Wish list
$300 for taxis – this could be way off! This Denverite has no idea what to expect in the shuttling of 10 people to/from the airport, and if we will need taxis at all besides then and what they cost. Any input?
$? Workshops, passes and tickets
$500 for gas and car expenses for our cast member Steve, who is driving out
$60 for show passes for Daniel’s parents since we are not paying his airfare or lodging
$500 for our accompanist Daniel’s flight. He is combining his trip with a visit with family.
$900 for meals and groceries – boils down to $10 per meal per person for 9 meals over 4 days
$500 for one nice dinner for the team one of the four nights we are there – this is in excess and would be a real treat
$800 is the fee for using GFM (8% of what we raise, so this is less if we don’t meet our goal).
Anything over this will first fund the contingency, then the Bovine Metropolis Theater School of Improv Scholarship Fund. I’m an accountant by trade, and will keeping receipts.

We believe $10k, however high, represents a fully paid trip $1000 per person for a 4-night trip, reasonable airfare, cheap lodging, group transportation and $30/day food budget in New York. The team as a whole has some member that do not need any help, and others that do, so we are pooling our funds. However, no one is getting a “full ride”. We are too proud, and our supporters deserve better than that. We are grateful to the donors that are team members, immediate family, friends and Denver improvisers. Moreover, we are blown away by the generosity and spirit of strangers in love with improv!

Special thanks to the Bovine Metropolis Theater for guidance, playtime and encouragement.
