My Medical Trip to the D.R.

Hello everybody! My name is Gisela Ortega and I am currently a pre-med/Biology major in my second year at UT Austin.  This Spring Break I am planning on taking a trip to the Dominican Republic (DR) with an organization at UT called Global Medical Training (GMT). Through GMT,  I will be able to travel with a group of fellow pre-med students to areas within the DR that are in much need of medical assistance. We will spend a day in each location, setting up clinics where we can examine, diagnose, and treat patients. Along with the medical service, we will be taking as much medical supplies as we can, including vitamins, antibiotics, and other medicines, so that no patient we see will walk away empty-handed.
This time two years ago, I was going through a similar process of fundraising with my senior class. We were able to raise enough money to travel to the DR and supply shoes and toys to children in rural areas. While there in the DR, visiting the orphanages and the villages called bateyes, I saw first hand the lack of medical care. Since then, I have been hoping to return one day and provide the basic medical attention that we so often take for granted. Now, through GMT, I have an opportunity to do so while also gaining experience in my future profession.
