About Me

It all started during my junior year on August 2013 when I debut my first fashion collaboration collection under the name R/G with Ryan Edmonds at Portland Fashion Week. Little after our first debut we were entered into a competition to show at Mercedes-Benz in New York City. After hard work and grueling hours, on January 2014 we debuted our second collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week In New York all still in my junior year. Finally in my senior year at The Art Institute of Portland, What I am asking for is help to fund my senior thesis collection. This will be my first solo collection. With the cost of college expenses and medical necessities, I can only go so far.

Ever since I was young, I’ve had a wild imagination and used it to escape the everyday realities I would face. Not many know but when I was born, I was diagnosed with one weak kidney and one not fully developed. The many hospital visits and overnight stays forced me to look at things in a different perspective. I ended up getting a kidney transplant due to kidney failure and thanks to my mother I am here today. To deal with reality, I would escape into my mind and dream of ways to create my imaginative ideas. From construction paper to old used paper cups I would use materials found around the hospital and give life to my creations.

Coming from humble beginnings, I have held onto that mentality and decided to go to the Art Institute of Portland and major in Apparel Design. I took my conservative parents and convinced them this was what was meant for me. Imagine trying to convince two traditionally raised Mexican parents you wanted to go to school to learn to sew. Before I stepped foot into school, I never knew how to sew, pattern, drape nor even read a pattern and now I am creating handbags, Avant-garde hats, tailored capes and more thanks to my determination and dedication. My passion is what fuels me and my creativity is what keeps me pushing for more.

I take my education seriously and I am constantly looking of ways to learn new techniques and ways to construct, design or approach any project. My imagination does not stop there; I find inspiration in every aspect from digital graphics, art museums, web layouts, photography, etc. I am the student you see in the room meticulously working away into the long hours of the night even after being at work from 4am-1pm. The one who chooses to push the boundaries while most play it safe. The guy who finds a way to make a very challenging design come to life rather than give up. To me this is more than a dream I am chasing, its something I feel with every fiber in my soul that is meant for me.

What You Are Funding

The concept of my senior thesis collection is called Equilibrium. I am fascinated with the idea of merging both sexes and giving an androgynous like appearance. Garments transform the silhouettes and tailoring is used to give a feeling of equalization to both sexes. Fall is carried into spring/summer through the idea of layering in fine lightweight fabrics. Garments appear to have layers but really are part of the same garment. Most pieces can be interchanged between the sexes and comfort is not sacrificed. I want both males and females to want to wear this collection because it pushes ones boundaries comfortably into trying something new. I hope to have you believe in my vision enough to be part of it as I make this collection a reality. The money I raise is to pay for materials and a photoshoot which is required for graduation. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

As I mentioned earlier, I am humbled and proud to say I showed a collaborative collection with my friend/design partner Ryan Edmonds under the name R/G. this collection was an expansion from our first collection and we decided to introduce menswear. It was about merging two worlds both male and female and creating a line that was comfortably pushing the boundaries while keeping ease and aspects of tailoring. Here is a glimpse of some of the runway looks.

Portland Fashion Week

As mentioned earlier this is the collection it all started with. I partnered up with my friend Ryan Edmonds and we decided to do a collection just for fun. It was an experimentation of two different personalities. We learned a lot from one another and wanted to keep this collection true to our aesthetic. Little did we know this was just the first step into an amazing learning experience.

Projects

Here is a sample of how my mind works and a mini look into my process. I like to dive into projects as if a customer was comissioning a product. Putting boards together and creating my own layouts, I like to illustrate my whole conecpt and process that best represents me as a brand; modern, slick, minimal and experimental. I adapt my ideas to a customers needs while keeping a degree of my design aesthetic.

Handbag Desgin

I wanted to create a handbag that was different than the average design we see everyday. Pushing silouhette and construction, every part of the surface has a unique detail. From the stitch work to the inner structure of the entire bag it was one of the challenging projects but as you can see I enjoyed it and these were the results.

Print Making

Did a class on print making and these are the results I came up with. Still staying consistant with my aesthetic. First part I decided to do a series of prints for menswear and incorporated a couple hand sketches with mixed media to create and distort this series of prints. The second is a set of prints for an all female collection. Being me, I really branched out and created the colors and media with nothing but hair extensions, canvas, and a series of colored paints. I tried to use the computer less this time and dived more in with a hands on approach.
