Grant's Story :: Minot North Dakota Boy with Batten Disease

Grant was born in May of 2012--born to Scott and Melissa Lawson of Minot North Dakota. He was born healthy, happy and adorable. Throughout his first year he progressed just as big brother Grayson, hitting all his milestones and continuing with his happy disposition. Progress halted at his first birthday. Something was terribly wrong, and symptoms emerged that would scare any parent. Doctors and specialists were called, and the search for a diagnosis began.

In January 2015, after many doctor visits and continued loss in functioning Grant was given a diagnosis. The formal name for the disease is neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (also known as Batten Disease.) With Batten disease, cells are thrown out of balance with the build-up of proteins and lipids (fats). Due to these damaged cells, patients with Batten disease suffer progressive neurological impairment, which includes:

Seizures
Visual impairment/blindness
Personality and behavior changes
Dementia
Loss of motor skills and the ability to walk, talk and communicate

But what this means for Grant's family is that they will only have him for a short time--this time will be filled with doctors visits, specialized care and mounting medical costs.

Our family is asking for your donations to assist Melissa and Scottie with these costs--it is our goal to reduce the financial stress so that they can maximize their time with Grant during these years.

On behalf of Scott, Melissa, Big Brother Grayson, Little Brother Gavin---as well as our extended family---I thank you for your donation.
