Grosse Pointe Rotary ‘Re-Imagining’ Tot Lot for 21st Century

We are happy to announce that through many generous donations, on and offline, we have met our goal.  We thank everyone who has contributed to the cause....Click here if you want to volunteer and be a part of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Tot Lot Re-imagined.

On Aug. 1, 2019, the Rotary Club of Grosse Pointe
unveiled the $250,000 “re-imagining” of its nearly half-century-old Tot Lot in the City of Grosse Pointe to make it an ADA/ADHD compliant, all-inclusive play park and learning development environment for kids 2 to 5 years of age.

In 1973, Grosse Pointe Rotary designed and installed the initial Tot Lot play park for children 2 to 5 years of age at the corner of St. Clair and Waterloo in the City of Grosse Pointe. Then, in 1997-98, the club performed a true makeover of the original park and invested significantly in park improvements.

The Tot Lot is the only dedicated ADA-compliant and all-inclusive children's play park that is open at all residents and families of the five Grosse Pointe communities and Harper Woods.

It’s time to update and bring these insights and improvements to the Rotary Tot Lot with a design makeover involving an investment of $250,000.

The park’s mission was then and is now to attract and encourage children to play with family and, more importantly, each other, because play is critical for healthy physical, social, emotional and intellectual development in tots 2 to 5. Rotarians further recognize the importance of creating an all-inclusive environment for children of all abilities, one that is compliant with the American Disabilities Act to better serve young children with physical and emotional challenges.

The Rotary Tot Lot re-imagining begins with two playscape structures designed for tots 2 to 5 years of age. Both designs deliver different challenges with each connecting element.

Second, the three-bay swing-set framing will be replaced. The new ADA-compliant swings will allow adult and child to face each other and swing together.

Spread out across the Tot Lot will be new freestanding play modules — a spinning Merry-Go-All;  the Discover Cave in which to hide, crawl through or climb over; in-ground and elevated wheelchair accessible sandbox and a wheelchair-friendly picnic table.

This is not about throwing out the old to make room for the new. In addition, many of the “old favorites” in the Tot Lot are being retained and refurbished.

The Tot Lot is for all young children in the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.
Rotarians hope this becomes a community-wide effort all residents endorse and generously support; one that brings residents together in service to our children and grandchildren; one that creates a point-of-community pride and accomplishment.

We are asking for and welcome your donations now. Together we will make this mutually beneficial dream come true for the spring season of 2020.

About Rotary of Grosse Pointe
Rotary club of Grosse Pointe was chartered in 1937 and has served the five Grosse Pointe communities for 82 years. Grosse Pointe Rotary service projects include the “3 Million Pound Challenge,” where Rotarians collected and distributed 3,276,000 pounds of clothing and food to those in need and 22,000 books toward Rotary’s Aid to Literacy initiative.

In recent years, G.P. Rotary has donated 26,400 new winter coats to children in need through our annual Operation Warm endeavor. It is surprising to many the number of coats that go to schoolchildren in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.

Rotary of Grosse Pointe meets weekly on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, 788 Lakeshore Rd., Grosse Pointe Shores. Visitors are welcome.
