Help us GLOW in Kenya!!
GLOW stands for Girls Leading Our World. The vision for this Peace Corps inspired curriculum is to empower and teach practical skills to cultivate leadership qualities & a healthy lifestyle in young women in Kenya. There is grave importance in discussing topics like self esteem, conflict-resolution, sex, relationships, HIV/AIDS, etc. Often topics such as these are glossed over and people can pretend the looming issues are not there. But by leaning into sometimes uncomfortable topics, girls are empowered and equipped with the knowledge and skills to be world changers within their own realms! They have the ability to be leaders in their homes, friend groups, schools, and communities! They become women of integrity and they see the power of their choices and perspectives in life.
Last year with the help of so many incredible ladies, donors, Heritage Academy, & Mungu pekee (only God) we were able to put on 2 GLOW camps for about 175 students (one in Makutano & one in Maai Mahiu)! This year, we are excited to announce that we have 3 GLOW camps on the horizon! After each camp, we see passionate facilitators plead "we HAVE to do a GLOW camp at this school or in this community!" So, here we are working with women whose desire is to see girls equipped with the knowledge to go far.
April 9th-13th we will be working with a school and community leaders though a organization, Hydrating Humanity, to host a GLOW camp in Migori County, Kenya. 21% of the population are youth ages 15-24 and HIV prevalence is nearly 2.5 times higher here than the national prevalence of 14.3% (Kenya HIV County Profiles 2016). The women in the area are excited to be a part of this week, are doing most of the marketing, and believe in the topics that will be discussed!
In August, together with the social work department of Moi University in Eldoret, we'll be putting on the 2nd GLOW camp in 2018. Moi University has a long-standing partnership with Indiana University (where I am currently getting my MSW). They have agreed that I am able to do my field practicum with them as we train Social Work students and community members to facilitate a GLOW camp in Eldoret. The two female lecturers I am working with at Moi are incredible and are already working with youth in the area. We are excited to learn from them and strengthen what is already happening there!
Finally, in November/December, we will be hosting a 3rd GLOW camp in Naivasha at a school connection from one of our facilitators!
In prioritizing and recognizing the assets and resources of each community, we are working together in coming up with budgets. We are excited to have the community donating their resources to ensure GLOW camp happens for their girls! Schools are allowing us to use their facilities and facilitators are donating their time, expertise, and passion (this would make camp much more expensive). We also require the students pay something to encourage their family invest in the week of GLOW camp. It only costs about $1500 to pull off an entire GLOW camp for up to 200 girls (food, supplies, printing, etc). In working with the communities' contributions, we're going to try to fundraise $1,300 for each camp! We are creating this Go Fund Me to raise money for deserving young ladies to have an incredible experience during GLOW camp that we are trusting can be monumental in their lives. We've seen how incredible GLOW camp can be. We believe in it. And we believe in the importance of reminding these girls that they are so incredibly worthy, beautiful, and have something to give. They deserve the space and opportunity to discuss these invaluable topics. They can rise above circumstancial issues and teach others what they learn!
