Background
I am a middle school teacher at Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy where we are trying to reinvent education on the eastside of Austin. Our mission statement is "In an environment of brotherhood, the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy develops scholars who are empathetic, service-oriented problem-solvers—lifelong learners who succeed in high school, college, career and life." At GGYMLA, 93% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, meaning that their access to technology is often times only available in the classroom. Our young men are working hard to advance their lives through academics and I am looking for help to get them the tools they need to be successful in today's technology driven economy.
Why this is needed
Students today are more engaged when a lesson is delivered on a screen versus the traditional paper method. Furthermore, students need to develop technological literacy and not think that the internet was invented for SnapChat and Instagram. The problem is that the resources necessary for my students to achieve this goal is not always readily available. My goal this year go as completely paperless as possible by having a classroom set of laptops and I need your help. Any donation large or small will go a long way in helping to ensure that my students are given every opportunity to succeed.
