Irvin's Transplant Fund

My name is Irvin Xochitla and I am a 23 year-old suffering from renal failure, also known as kidney failure. I was diagnosed with the illness at the age of 13, and I have been undergoing a treatment called peritoneal dialysis since June 2, 2005.

This treatment requires me to be hooked up to a machine every night for nine hours. It does the work that my kidneys are supposed to do and it is the reason that I am still alive. I had been living in Atlanta, Georgia since I was only 8 months old, but at the age of 18 there were complications. In 2010, I became ineligible to continue my treatment under the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital. This was following my 18th birthday, and I was unable to continue with my monthly check-ups because I was no longer insured.

Provided that I am undocumented, I had a hard time being able to pay for the treatment and my family could not afford to help me cover the costs.

It it just so unfair that I must be forced to live with this illness for almost 10 years now, and I still require the treatment at my young age. Getting sick is a constant concern and I have had to be admitted to the hospital on several occasions. This forced me to leave my home and family back in Atlanta to come to California to seek dialysis treatment.

I have been living in Los Angeles for the past three years and have been receiving my medical necessities, but I have still not been put on the waiting list for a transplant. My doctor attempted to refer me for the list, but I was rejected due to not having a social security number. I feel like my life is not taken seriously because of my status. It all feels like I am not seen as worthy because I lack the documentation. I just want my life to be taken seriously, so that I may get better and live a healthy life.

I want to live a life where I no longer need a machine to keep me alive. I want a life where I can be stronger and not be that much more vulnerable to succumb to depression. I want to be happy and I feel I have the right to live and to be given a chance to live no matter what my legal status is on paper. These are just a few of my struggles these past 10 years.
