Dan is no stranger to climbing mountains...but we thought this time we'd give him a little break & try moving them for him!

Serving in the AmeriCorps in his twenties Dan spent a lot of time trailblazing, leading him to his love for the great outdoors! He's climbed Mt. Katahdin & Mt. Washington, hiked the Red Rocks of Utah and reveled in the beauty of Stonehenge in England. At just 38 years old, those are just a few of the places he has traveled and he's NOT done yet! His love for travel has brought him on many adventures around the world. The list is quite impressive...although I am sure his next adventure is one he would gladly pass up!

You may know him from growing up in Orient Heights or attending East Boston schools. You may know him as a Youth Worker or crossed paths with him at one of his city jobs within the East Boston community. Maybe, you have bowled with him on Monday nights or attended the Annual Saratoga Gathering beside him; maybe you haven't met him at all and have just enjoyed his passion for the East Boston Community showcased through his ANTI CASINO Facebook posts. No matter what your relationship with Dan is, everyone can agree and knows he is intelligent, funny, compassionate, an amazing friend and just wonderful person to be around. What most people do not know is the internal battle Dan faces every day of his life.

Dan was born with a very rare blood condition, Diamond Blackfan Anemia(DBA). This rare form of anemia effects roughly 5 out of every 1 million children born. That's only 30 people a year!

DBA prevents Dan from making enough red blood cells needed to carry oxygen throughout his body. Oh yes! You read right his organs are running on just a percentage of what yours run on a daily basis...feeling lazy? Dan has fought through this condition without missing a beat and now he is facing his biggest battle of all! After years of various treatments, Dan has had to make a tough decision in order to save his life; he will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant.

This is where we ask that you help us start moving those mountains I was talking about earlier! On November 29, 2013 Dan will enter the hospital, where he will undergo many treatments including, chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant.

He will then spend months recovering and fighting to regain his health and strength. I'm not sure why a man who can climb to the top of Mt. Washington 20+ times can't go back to work the day after, but apparently the hospital frowns upon that type of activity!
