Freedom Readers Back to School Fund

It's that time of year again! Back to School season is officially in full swing.

A number of fine community organizations are holding great events to help our children prepare for another successful year.

Backpacks and school supplies are being given away just about every weekend. It warms my heart to see this.

At Freedom Readers, we're kicking off our Back to School Fundraising Campaign today because we want to go a step beyond the one time event. For the past six years, we've been improving reading skills in low-income communities by providing one-to-one literacy tutoring, free books for home libraries, and an inspiring, high-energy learning environment.

We understand the the undeniable link between reading skills and incarceration rates. A student not reading at his or her grade level by the end of the third grade is four times less likely to graduate high school on time–six times less likely for students from low-income families. Take that and add to it a 2009 study by researchers at Northwestern University that found that high school dropouts were 63 times (!) more likely to be incarcerated than college grads and you can start to see the urgency of our work.

We hope you'll join our Back to School  Campaign today and help us change the world.
