Folklore: New Salon/Community Space

Donation protected
Hi everyone! Sorry for the time lapse between updates. We've had to put the fundraising on hold as our agreement with the new space we were going to lease was less than honorable. We are taking this time to get our deposit back in small claims court and to focus on finding a more suitable space for Folklore and our community. We are confident we will win.

We are staying in our current space for the time being and will send updates with any new information as it comes. Your donations will stay safe here, your perks will be delivered, and we will keep you posted on when we can move on our move. It is of utmost importance that we move into a space where we know we can continue to grow the roots we've set in our community as well as bring to life the future vision we've set out below. We are happy to answer any questions via the gofundme email link next to my name on the upper right, which goes to our salonfolklore email.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, your love and support is in itself keeping us encouraged and motivated to move forward with our vision.❤

Folklore is about creating a space where our communities stories can be told, shared and celebrated. Founded in 2011, Folklore Salon has grown from a small idea into a central cultural space for our Los Angeles Queer community.

Folklore is a mirror for Los Angeles’ diversity. We’re the only queer owned and all queer operated salon in town, and one of the few hair grooming spaces that provides services based on length and style of hair, not gender.

Folklore welcomes, celebrates all gender identities and expressions, races, and sexualities both in our staff and our clients.

Growing Pains:
We love our location in Echo Park, but we are outgrowing our small space and are experiencing the backlash of high rising rents.  With a growing staff and our rent skyrocketing in such a small space — we need a new home!

Future Vision:
Don't worry friends, this is a good thing! We want to take this opportunity to expand the salon with a larger vision: A space for the queer community that offers jobs, opportunities and workshops in line with our current social values. Moving into a new larger space  will not only let us offer our traditional salon services and increase our staff, but will also allow us to materialize our vision of laying down long-standing roots for growth.

The most important aspect of this new space is that we will have the staff and room to offer workshops on hair care, self-care, and grooming for our community, hair and other products for sale by local LGBTQIA, QPOC, QTPOC folks, and host community events specifically centered around our community and diverse clientele. This is what has and what will continue to set Folklore apart from other salons.

A larger space will provide our team with a more efficient, comfortable and most importantly—- accessible-- working environment. We intend to make our entire space wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant, something we couldn't do in our current space. We will also finally have room to host workshops on self-care and grooming for Queer and Trans folks, with more events to bring our community together.

Problem/ Solution:
Update! Due to the events mentioned above, we are still searching to find a place that will best fit our brand and be most conducive to expanding our salon, as well as building the community-focused space we envision.  New location TBA.

We need your help!
We need our community to come together to help realize this dream! None of this would be possible without our community standing next to us to help make this happen. Thank you to all those who have donated, your funds will stay safe here until we find a new location, sign a new lease and resume fundraising.

Our goal is to raise $50,000. We need to cover a few build out costs, stylist station installation, all while covering rent for two locations until construction is complete.  Most of the funding will go to rent, construction costs, and making the space ADA accessible and suitable for work and workshops for all folks.

Create this space with us!
Preserving our Queer Spaces is imperative to our survival. We want to continue to create community on a larger scale in a space that is dedicated to inclusivity, supporting each other, and welcoming of ALL folks.

Thank you for literally helping to build a new home along with us!

Perks!
Our awesome perks will be posted soon! They will include ethically made pins, mugs, and tshirts designed by local queer artists.  Plus some high roller rewards donated from friends and local businesses. Bonus!

Thank you for your continued support. It means the world.
