Mieson's Battle Against Sickle Cell

Have you ever been in the presence of a Warrior? I have. Mieson is a 6 year old who is full of life, even in sickness. He has a Sickle Cell Anemia: S. Beta 0 Thallassemia. 3 weeks after his birth, I recieved a phone call from his Doctor asking me to sit down. She then went on to explain to me his blood work and the next steps I had to take. My world came crashing down when she told me that the only cure is a Bone Marrow Transplant, but it may kill him in the process. I cried for days... How can someone so innocent have such a powerful disease. The more I looked at him, the more I cried.
Then one day I snapped out of my depression. I thought, "Mieson has this disease, but this disease doesn't have him." At about 10 months Mieson had his first Crisis. His body stopped producing bone marrow. He was very ill. No amount of literature can prepare you for a Crisis. I had read everything, from front to back. But when it finally came, I wasn't prepared. I sobbed at his bedside for hours. Then his nurse came in and pulled me to the side and reminded me of our bond. She said that his survival depended upon my strength. She said that we were connected. He knows when I am down, so he will feel down. After our talk, I wiped my face and picked myself up. This is how our journey began.
For 6 years we have tried numerous treatments to relieve him of pain, but each new venture is only a temporary fix. Last year, yet again we had another very serious Crisis. His body stopped producing  Bone Marrow again. He was very tired all that week. We went to Clinic, but he was well enough to go home. We watched him closely, but one day he rose out of bed sweating profusely. He didn't know our names. He didn't know where he was. He was dazed and confused, and he couldn't walk. He recieved a blood transfusion and slowly came back around. He was soon discharged, but it took about 6 months to get him to walk again. This tore me up, but I have always asked him to fight, even when he didn't feel like it. He worked with his Dad and I day and night to get stronger. Each day he worked harder and harder to walk around with his siblings.
2 weeks ago, Mieson was admitted again. The sickled Red Blood Cells were lodged in his spleen and clogging it up. He was very sick. The Doctor's were begging him to stay with us. He couldn't remember his name, and he took a long time remembering his age. He needed another blood transfusion and 4 bags of fluids. His spleen was saved. But after a visit to Clinic last week, we were told that if this happens 2 more times, they are going to have to remove it.
Mieson has a very weak immune system. Because of this, he is homeschooled. He is very smart. He is in a kindergarten homeroom, but takes 1st grade classes, of which he is half-way done with his favorite subject, Reading/Language Arts! He will have you at Hello! And his name is so fitting, when you walk away you feel like he became apart of you. He really becomes everybody's Mieson (My son).
The journey ahead is a long one. A life long process, with many winding turns, that leads to the unknown. But he deserves to have a fighting chance.
100% of the proceeds will go towards Mieson's care. Which will include: nutritional supplements, transportation to and from the hospital or Clinic, hospital fees/tests uncovered by insurance, organic foods, and a transition into Holistic Health Care. I am so used to going at this alone, but I need the help of my family and friends. Mieson needs your help!
