Faye's trip to NCOBPS

At UC Irvine, there are 106 Black academic faculty. Of this number, 1 of these faculty members are currently teaching within the Political Science Department. Within the political science department, there are not many classes offered that deal explicitly with Black racial politics. Personally, I am beginning research exploring the myth of Black on Black crime in post-racial America. I seek to unpack the Black on Black crime trope by looking at how it functions in society as well as the mental, emotional, and economic implications it has on Black people. How is someone who is honestly concerned about how the stereotype of Black on Black crime is operating politically supposed to be prepared to conduct research on it with this curriculum?

I need funding to attend the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS) to begin to supplement my political science curriculum with training from scholars who are similarly concerned about Black people and how political science can be a tool for understanding the predicaments that Black people face in this society.

I need the opportunity to study among NCOBPS scholars. I will be able to talk to other Black political scientists that have done similar research and gain more tips and insight to be successful. The benefit of NCOBPS is that it opens up at network of over 400 active members. They have a demonstrated record of training Black Political Scientists, sending them on to jobs in public policy, elected office, and to graduate programs in political science. It is very supportive of students who seek to move forward in their political science careers.

NCOBPS past presidents are prominent political scientists such as Dianne Pinderhughes, Melissa Nobles, and Desiree Pedescleaux. They have been active in not only NCOBPS but in the American Political Science Association as well. NCOBPS has a proven history of bringing together some of the most brilliant minds in the field.

I am a graduating senior this year with aspirations of attending graduate school. Being exposed to hundreds of Black Political Scientists will be very beneficial to me as the conference will expose me to prominent and successful Black political scientists who will be sharing their experiences and presenting their research on various topics discussing Black racial politics in America.

Though the School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine has given me funding, it is not enough to cover all expenses. Thank you for your help and support!

And a special thank you to Dr. Willoughby-Herard!!! None of this would be possible without her support and guidance.
