You will not find greater examples of humanity than Assumpta Ugiramariya and Faustin Iyamuremye - strong in the face of adversity, devoted, strong, kind, loving, intelligent, accomplished, steeped in their faith - and so very loved. I first met Assumpta in graduate school at the University of Oregon in Autumn of 1989. They had come to the United States from Rwanda to complete their advanced studies - she says I was her "first, American friend." We developed an immediate and strong bond that has endured over the years and miles between us, through marriage, the births and rearing of our children, career changes and moves, the loss of family members, and cancer that touched both of our families. And, early on, our friendship grew to include her dear husband, Faustin.
And so, we are heartbroken to say that on February 21, Faustin lost his battle with cancer after years of treatments, surgeries, radiation - and endurance. He was valiant in his fight, graceful in his exit. Assumpta, her young adult children, Trina and Peter, and her nephews, Blaise, Gaston, and Amedee thank you for all the kindnesses and support you've bestowed upon them. Though they (and many friends and family) will miss Faustin terribly, we find relief in knowing that his suffering has ended and that he has now joined his Lord in heaven.
The family had health insurance, however, coverage was far from complete and many medical bills are left unpaid, and now, there will be burial costs in addition. We are reaching out to ask for your assistance with helping Assumpta take on these monumental bills - the most immediate need is to help cover funeral expenses, and the remainder will help, though not eliminate, remaining medical bills.
Other options for contributing to the family include sending a check directly to Faustin's wife, Assumpta (please contact me privately for her for her address if you do not have it) or to wire money through Western Union or Money Gram to an office in Lincoln, Nebraska.
