Father Bob Kaylor had a major stroke on March 4, 2017. He has received significant physical, occupational, and speech therapy during his stays at Aultman Woodlawn, Bethany, and Sanctuary Grande. To date, his recovery has been much better than anticipated, due in large part to this therapy and the support of his medical team, community, friends, and family.
One of the key neurological issues Father Bob is working to improve upon is aphasia - a language disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate. More specifically, it limits an individual's ability to convey thoughts through the use of speech, language, or writing.
Father Bob is anxious to begin working on his Chaplain role at Central Catholic High School, but his aphasia puts limits his involvement, as well as his daily living. At the recommendation of one of his former speech language pathologists, his family checked out the University of Michigan's Aphasia Program (UMAP). UMAP is one of a small number of therapy programs around the country that offers aphasia therapy to adults on an intensive interventon schedule. Studies show that intensive therapy works!
Father's Bob's family has investigated the program, cleared his participation with his medical and therapy teams, submitted his application and received approval, and are working through the logistical issues of Father Bob attending the next session in Michigan (1/29/18 to 2/22/18). As one might imagine, the cost of the program, lodging, "Visiting Angels" to help with his 24/7 care, meals, and transportation are significant. Throughout Father Bob's recovery journey, many individuals asked to have fundraisers or be contacted if donations are needed for anything involved in his recovery. There is overall agreement, that this program would be beneficial for Father Bob, but help is needed to quickly gather the funds necessary for his participation. Therefore, this "GoFundMe" campaign was started.
Rich and April will be attending the daily therapy sessions and plan to provide updates through Father Bob's CaringBridge site: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/fatherbobkaylor
At the suggestion of Father Bob's bank (Huntington) Rich set-up an additional checking account to be utilized specifically for therapy purposes. All "GoFundMe" donations will be deposited into this account.
If individuals are uncomfortable with donating on-line or have any questions, please contact Rich or April Kaylor directly.
Thank you for your consideration and ongoing support during Father Bob's continuing recovery.
