In January 2013, just a month after her one-year wedding anniversary, our friend, and long-time skating coach, Nancy Reitan-Stafne was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer.   

I don’t think anyone is ever ready to hear the word “cancer” or for that matter, be ready for the fight ahead.  But Nancy, taking one step, one day at a time, started her cancer journey.   She started her fight to “Kick Cancer’s Butt.”    To friends and family, skating students, and new friends yet to be made, Nancy quickly became an inspiration to all.  Her strength, determination, and even her humor have been amazing. Along the way, she has shared her story, thoughts, and emotions with her “Fancy Fighter Fans” (Fancy is her well known nickname) and we continue to be amazed at how she has juggled it all.

Nancy just celebrated her 40th Birthday, a milestone worth celebrating and that’s what she did!  What’s more, she also completed her 40th Chemo treatment, and that deserves a celebration too.  Nancy, you rock!

Sure, there are good days and bad.  There are days when we laugh together, and others, when you ask why?  But through all of this, Nancy has maintained a positive attitude and continues to shine.  What’s more, she continues to coach figure skating to over thirty students, a sport, her profession, which she loves. 

But here’s the kicker. Cancer is expensive.  You know that, we know that, but it doesn’t stop the bills from piling up.  And in Nancy’s profession, if she’s not on the ice teaching and coaching, she’s not getting paid.  To that, we want to help.  We want to help with her medical bills.  We want to relieve some of the financial stress for her and her family.  When we do that, she can focus on her fight, and right now, this is what she needs to do.
