Family Support Services at RMH!

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters of Family Support Services at Ronald McDonald House,

My name is Alex Jacobs and I am a clinical psychology doctoral student and psychology practicum student at the Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles.

As a four-time Boston Marathon qualifier and Ironman triathlon finisher, I love running. It's true. I love to train and race in endurance events, to see how far I can push myself to achieve goals. Now, I am putting my sights on a new goal: a 50 Mile Ultramarathon in San Diego, California on January 17, 2015. The race itself, however, is just a small part of what I hope to achieve this time!

Through my running, I am hoping to raise money for Family Support Services (FSS) of Ronald McDonald House. What is Ronald McDonald House and what is FSS? Good questions! RMH provides a "home away from home" for families coming from all over the world to Los Angeles to seek advanced medical treatment for their critically or terminally ill children. Cancer, heart disease and other life-threatening illnesses can put unimaginable stress on marriages, families, extended families, siblings and on the young patients. It is emotionally difficult for the whole family. We created the Family Support Services (FSS) at RMH to provide support and helpful resources for the 75 families that live at the Los Angeles house while their child is receiving treatment and the staff that care for them.

As a member of the FSS team, I can attest to the incredible support that FSS provides to families. We offer support in a variety of ways, including: Fun Clubs (2-hour activities for families that go on every day); large social events for families like Carnivals and Parties; social hours so families can talk with other families going through the same thing; and importantly, we offer support in a private conversation setting. Psychology Trainees on the FSS team provide these forms of support to families, while also gaining clinical skills in psychology through classes, supervision, and practice.

Family Support Services needs your help! I am asking that you donate anywhere from one cent to one dollar for every mile that I run. Between now and January 17, my goal is to run 1,000 miles to support FSS, in addition to the 50 miles on race day. A donation of one cent/mile adds to $10.50. Of course, we appreciate larger donations. A donation of 50 cents/mile adds to $525.00. Think of what incredible support FSS can offer children and their families with these funds!

We also appreciate support in other forms, including donations of can goods, supplies, and your time to the Ronald McDonald House. If you are interested in supporting FSS in additional ways, please contact Dr. Susan Regas by email at [email redacted].

Don't forget to check in periodically to see my progress, see pictures, and learn more about FSS. I hope you will join me on this incredible adventure!
