Flossie's Kittens' Humidicrib

Donation protected
Flossie's Kitten Rescue is a Canberra based kitten rescue with experience in taking even the tiniest kittens and raising them to robust kittens who are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm free and ready to be adopted.

One of the toughest things with rescuing very small kittens is keeping their temperature regulated. Their own teeny thermostats cannot keep them warm, we have to do this for them, while also making sure they don't get too hot. Orphans don't have their mum to help them stay warm, so it's up to us.

At present at FKR we rig up a cat carrier with some insulation and a heat pad and them put layers of towels in and manually monitor the temperature in various parts of the box so that we locate the kittens in the right place, with a light covering over the top of them so they don't lose all their heat upwards. As the ambient temperature of the room changes throughout the day we make adjustments to keep the kittens just right.

With that on top of a regime of two-hourly feeds and bedding changes and formula prep and bottle washing you can see why we carers often look haggard in spring :). Loved up on kittens, but haggard.

And sometimes, sadly, the kittens don't make it. It's the heart-breaking reality for orphan kittens. They are up against the odds from the start.

It is such a loss that has led to this funding activity. We lost three three-day-old kittens just this week. Dear little jelly beans, but so weak. Even with around the clock care, it just wasn't enough.

Now I'm not claiming that a humidicrib will mean we can save them all. But it will help to keep their environment stable throughout the day and night. This means their little bodily systems won't have to work so hard. And it will take a huge load off the carers. We will sometimes tag-team to make sure a vulnerable litter has around the clock care with constant monitoring, without any one of us going mad from sleep deprivation.

So, if you think you want to help us purchase a humidicrib for the kittens at Flossie's Kitten Rescue and thus contribute to the kittens' care and to the wellbeing of the usually quite presentable carers who run this little endeavour: me, Kath, and my wing-person Nicole as well as a team of assorted helpers, volunteers, and general amazing folk, please do!

We we promise that the kittens will be eternally grateful.
