FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE

Donation protected
As all of my friends know I have worked and been self supporting since I was 16 years old. Health insurance was not a luxury I could afford this year. I told my self, next year will be better and I can afford it then. However, I was sucker punched With CANCER (Undifferentiated Non Small Cell Carcinoma) that has spread to my brain. It took an act of God to even get Medi-Cal for me. My case worker called and said I have good and bad news. Good news is Medi-Cal was approved, bad news is your share of cost is $3,500 a month the first month then goes down to $2,800 a month because I won't be working.
I just finished radiation and will start chemotherapy soon, however, we have struggled immensely to get the share of cost paid and still be able to have a roof over our head. The real problem has been that none of my therapy could even start until I had some form of insurance then my share of cost had to be paid. I have found that cancer trumps everything except not having any money to pay for therapy. My husband Don had his own medical issues and was disabled from December 2010 to 2013 and just started back to work 2 days a week, 4 weeks before I was diagnosed with cancer. The past 4 months have changed my perspective on a lot of things but since my diagnosis on June 14th, I can now honestly say I do understand how people leave the hospital and go home to die due to lack of insurance/money. When you receive a cancer diagnosis that is only the first step. Once they start treating you, then you have the peripheral stuff happen like thrush, poor memory, loss of fine motor control and lack of mobility and the cost of all of the medications that I must now take daily. Unfortunately, cancer does not come with an owner's manual.

I would like to thank all of the wonderful people who have already helped me through this process and include the people at social services, social security and Sutter Home Health Care.
Right now, my life is like a book and I am in the middle of a chapter, a chapter I refuse to leave unfinished.
Thank you. GIGI
