Evan passed away on October 20, 2017.

Evan’s cancer battle was very near and dear to my heart. I was new to my job and working the night he was diagnosed, Christmas Day 2014. Hearing his family react to the news shattered my heart and left me crying at my desk.

As a mother, I struggle seeing other children suffer with medical problems. Until watching Evan’s journey begin, I never thought I’d be emotionally strong enough to volunteer for children going through similar situations as his. If children have to fight cancer, I can be strong enough to hold it together in front of them. Putting a smile on their faces became my number one goal. I started volunteering with the Make A Wish Foundation a few months later. Evan’s aunt and I stayed in touch and she kept me up to date on his treatment, remission and relapses.

I remember tearing up hearing the news of Evan’s last relapse. With all this boy and his family had endured, he would have to fight again. I suggested that Evan be referred to Make A Wish now that he met the age requirement. He was assigned to me as his Wish Granter. I couldn’t wait for him to return from his treatment in Washington so we could start planning. I was excited to be a part of giving him an experience that he inspired me to volunteer for.

I will never be able to grant Evan’s Wish, but I will do my very best to keep his memory alive. My guess is, as much as he loved Nemo and sea turtles, he would have been headed for Sea World.

The money raised in this fundraiser will go towards a special plaque at the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium. A donation will be made to the zoo in his memory and a beautiful plaque will be mounted in the aquarium about him. Any and all additional funds left over will be donated to The Arizona Cancer Foundation For Children. This is an organization in Scottsdale that helped the Farrell family immensely.
