This beautiful young lady is very special to many of us. In August 2013, our lives changed in the blink of an eye.
On August 6, 2013, Elissa was admitted to Driscoll Children's Hospital due to discomfort in her chest with a cough. We were thinking it was asthma. After a chest X-ray, she was moved to the Oncology floor. The x-ray showed a mass in her chest. On August 13, 2013, Elissa was diagnosed with a soft tissue Askin's tumor of the chest wall - part of the Ewings Sarcoma family.
From August 2013 to March 2014, she received; 94 bags of chemo, 80 inpatient hospital stays, 55 doctor/clinic visits, 140 neupogen Injections, 12 blood transfusions, 5 platelet transfusions and numerous scans.
On March 25, 2014, Elissa had a thoracotomy to remove 3 ribs, part of her lung and the residual tumor. During that procedure, a new nickel sized tumor was found on her diaphragm which meant more chemotherapy :(
Elissa received more chemo from April - September 2014. On October 9th, Elissa was told all of her scans were clear with "No Evidence of Disease" and her mediport was removed on October 28th.
Last Sunday, November 16, 2014, our lives once again changed in the blink of an eye. Elissa had, what we thought, was a muscle spasm and was taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital. The following day resulted in a bone scan, chest ct, EEG and MRI. The results were heartbreaking.....
The cancer has spread to her brain, causing her to have seizures. The neurosurgeon at MD Anderson successfully removed two of the tumors last Friday (November21st). Now we are waiting for Elissa to heal to begin radiation and possibly more chemotherapy.
