Hello Everyone! My name is Shannon Russell, and I am a teacher running for a school board position with Duval County Public Schools in District 2. As a veteran teacher of eighteen years, I am very familiar with the needs and concerns of our students, teachers, parents, and schools. My focus is on protecting student learning time and teacher instructional time in the classroom, ensuring that all schools around the district have equal access to resources regardless of their neighborhood or letter grade, and building strong relationships and partnerships with our community leaders. Running for school board is the best way to ensure that these needs are met and your voices are heard. My foremost promise is to listen to you.

I teach in the IT Academy at Sandalwood High School as an eleventh grade English teacher, serve on the Shared Decision Making Committee, am a member of the PTSA, the head union representative, and serve on the Duval Teachers United board of directors as a strong advocate for public education. I have also taught in Duval County at Fletcher Middle School and Kernan Middle School, with experience teaching all grades 7-12.

I reside in Atlantic Beach and have lived in Duval County since 2000. I am originally from the Detroit area and graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1990. After high school I went on to pursue a career in teaching and graduated from Central Michigan University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, with a major in English and a minor in journalism. My teaching certification includes grades six through twelve, as well as an ESOL endorsement. I have also earned Highly Qualified Teacher status.

Stretching beyond teaching, I spend many hours advocating for our students, teachers, and public education. I have been involved in several demonstrations speaking out against state budget cuts and other actions that only cause harm to our schools. I work countless hours at meetings and connecting with people trying to improve education and to make it the best experience possible for our students.

Outside of education, I took an opportunity to serve as a production assistant for Growing A Greener World TV in 2012. I interviewed the non-profit Veterans Farm in Jacksonville and later worked on location with the show to film an episode. I also spent 2011-2012 assisting celebrity Chef Nathan Lyon with the editing of his cookbook Great Food Starts Fresh. It was later named one of the top twenty cookbooks of the year by the Washington Post.

In my spare time, I enjoy anything outdoors. If you look around you will often find me boating, fishing, kayaking, scalloping, lobstering, shrimping, gardening, blading, biking, cooking and grilling, or searching for sea glass on our local beaches. Shopping at the Beaches Farmers Market on Saturdays, the Atlantic Beach Mid-Week Market on Wednesdays, the monthly Beaches Art Walk, and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere at Lillie's Coffee Bar are some of my favorite ways to spend the day as well. Supporting local and small businesses is extremely important to me.

OFFICIAL CANDIDATE BALLOT STATEMENT

I am a strong advocate of public education. I attended public schools in Michigan, and I graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. As a veteran teacher of eighteen years, I know our students, parents, teachers, administrators, schools, and communities. I know and understand their needs and concerns because I live and breathe them every single day. Education is my passion. I am tired of unfunded state mandates and harmful district decisions that do not work and hurt our children. I do not support excessive and high stakes testing, charter schools, vouchers, or the Common Core Standards. Their implementations do not have our children's best interests at heart. I support smaller class sizes, greater teacher autonomy, and a quality education for all students. I will be accessible to meet with all members of our communities to ensure your voices and input are heard. I serve as a leader as a member of DTU's board of directors, a union representative, and a member of school-related committees. I will continue to advocate for our students and public schools.
