The day is nearly upon us and through the generosity of local sponsors and stall holders paying there fees we have raised enough funds to host the event in a very basic form. Having spent the past 3 months organising this I have discovered just how expensive it is but also what amazing things can be done for future years (and this one still) !!
I see lots of posts on Facebook from parents looking for good Santa's Grottoes which invariably involve driving quite a way, paying a fairly exorbitant entrance fee and you get nothing for it other than the experience and a photo opportunity. Well, at the Earlsfield Christmas lights we have had a professional Santa for the past two years (and again this year) and if everyone who went to these various Grottoes instead donated just half of what they spent normally we could afford to have live reindeer, a big sleigh, probably hire some elves as well as Santa!
It costs approximately £5,000 to just put on the event, to make a really good Santa's grotto as mentioned above would probably be another £2,500, Another £1,500 or so could have some really good lights set up in the Leather Bottle garden for the "big switch on" £1,500 could provide enough snow to cover the garden etc. etc.
We all want this area to be as "local" as possible, nice shops on the high street and have a community feel but that requires us, the local residents, to support those businesses rather than just wishing them here. According to the internet the population of Earlsfield is 15,448, if we could raise just £10,000 from the local area (65p per person) then combined with the money raised by sponsors and stall holders we could make this a truly fantastical event each year which would actually save you money from going to visit a Santa.
Please help support the local area at the most magical time of year.
